HD VIDEO CAMERAS FOR A LONG, HARD RIDING, ROAD TRIP

Backstory: Seen a vid some time ago of a dude that rode his MC from Alaska to Argentina; high N to low S. Was well edited with music and some interesting shots from using poles and IDK WTF else but it was a good vid.

Current: I have a 1951 Oldsmobile sedan in CA that originated from MD that needs to return back to MD. Hence roadtrip. I got the Olds from my Grandfather who bought it from another longstanding Talbot Co. resident, and I worked on that dude's house in my youth with my Grandfather. I know I could sell it easier in CA but IDGAF, it's not for sale.

I think I have the roadtrip map/logistics figured out; there's an Olds group I can connect with. Likely Fall 2022 with my cousin, from MD, as a co-driver.

I'll be separating my current employment soon; scheduled for April 15 bit FTW any day looks good now. Ronnie Milsap; Any day now...

Vehicle: All original with replacement fuel pump and water pump, fuel filter; 6v. I'll get new tires and have a line on parts that may be problematic like fuel pump, water pump, back up battery. 70K original miles. I'll have it checked out by mechanic, if not old school US then an E European, but it should be GTG

Subject to proof; break down on I 80 Donner Pass W/E incline would suck balls.

Questions:
Anyone have any recommendation for Go Pro or whatever set ups to record the trip? I'm thinking perhaps one at 12 and two at 10 and two. And what to run for juice and where to store the data? Or one at 12 and two like body cameras? Or 12 and 6 to catch the tractor trailer riding my slow ass?

Really looking for video recommendations; this trip up like that MC ride will be one hell of a lot of video editing work. And IDK if I can cover that. The video would be a nice touch. But sometimes less is more.

But if anyone has any other suggestions, of a legitimate nature, kindly bring it.

GoPros would work fine, and the quality of a recent model GoPro would be far above any dash cam or similar action cam I have seen.

However - you will need external power. I have a pair of Hero 7 blacks... with a 256gb MicroSD card they can record about 9 hours of video - but the batteries will only last an hour. If you're going to run 9hrs or less per day you could figure one card per cam per day. If more you'll have to switch more often. Some cameras may allow for larger cards, but 512 and bigger are hard to find and $$$. From what I recall the price increase isn't linear over 256gb, it goes up dramatically.

You can pop the port cover doors off (they're designed for this), and attach a USB C cord powered by an external battery. However... if you do this they are no longer water resistant. A significant rain would probably damage them.

I believe there are charging cases you can get that allow external power + water resistance, but you are going to be getting very bulky and awkward if you do that with multiple cameras. Also $$ of course.

FYI the 9 hour comment is based on 4k resolution at 30fps, but not the highest setting. I prefer a narrower setting that doesn't give a wide, distorted view. You may want a wider view and YMMV.

I have driven the Donner route driving a entertainment coach pulling a uhaul double axle trailer up and over and i do totally agree the views are outstanding and the food is not bad as well. I didnt even have to use the emergency truck pull off ramps on the way down..

Ok, ignore my comments about rain/water damage risk and cases making the cameras bulky.

Your comments about a MC ride and having a Co-driver for some reason made me jump to the idea that you were driving back a pair of vehicles... IE the olds with a motorcycle escort. Re-reading this morning I see that is not what you said.

Two GoPros with external power (2A phone chargers with USB C cables) and suction cups or other mount would work fine.

As I said, I'd guestimate one 256gb card per camera for every 8-9 hours at 4:3 4k resolution @ 30fps. Wider view, higher FPS, or using 5k resolution in the newer Hero 9 or 10 cameras will use space faster.

I think a USB power bank would be ideal for this. The power bank could be charged overnight when you stop.

Your setup is limited by your wallet.

As far as storage, bring a laptop with an external HDD with you. Move videos from your SD cards to the external overnight.

Look at some of the camera setup from the Gymkhana shoots. They have magnetic mounts for the outside of the car that give cool angles.

I'd mount them as high as possible in the car, seems to give the best perspective. Body worn may be cool for a few shots, but you would mostly be capturing the interior of the car.

Thanks for the input everyone; I'll digest. I appreciate it and welcome all additional input. Tried to find that MC video on YT but all I find is garbage. It was well done, good film, good music, no ass hattery commentary BS.

Will likely take Rt 50 rather than I 80; Carson Pass not Donner. 50 connects Sac to Salisbury; I've been on 50 from Sac to Colorado. It's less traveled and likely a better fit for the trip.

One of them whirley bird drones may be worth adding to the long hard camera mix for overhead shots while not driving.

May be worth bringing out my Cousin's son, my nephew, to run the vids as he has youngster skills. Or not; I recall fun times with the ladies in Ely NV back in the 80's!

I'll also add to this a C&R run, coast to coast, integrated into this, fits for me.

There is a lot of chit on the back 40 of BFE/USA

Good advice, but FTFY, because Murphy says if you move all your videos to a single external HDD, on or about the last day of the trip that HDD will go missing or vent all of its magic smoke, taking all of them with it.

Making two copies ensures neither will ever fail. Murphy likes to give you a false sense of complacency.

Two is cheap insurance. A 1TB HDD can be had for $25.

If you're getting GoPros and want to save money, if 4k 60fps resolution is good enough, get the Hero 7 Black. It's a couple generations older but does fantastic video for much cheaper.

Avoid the Hero 7 Silver or White budget models, they are neutered in various ways.

The 8 added nothing spectacular except no need for a frame for mounting (It was the first model with built-in fold down mounts. The frame isn't extra on the 7, it is required for mounting but comes with the camera.)

The 9 brought higher resolution (5k) but kept the same processing chip, causing slowww responses to commands and button presses. It was very underpowered.

The 10 has a brand new generation of processing chip which fixes the 9's problems and by all accounts is fantastic, but is the latest model and will be more $$$.

TL;DR: If $$$ is not an object, get the Hero 10 (~$490). If it is, skip the 8 & 9 and just get the Hero 7 Black (~$259). JMO.
