Anyone have recommendations on a larger (say about 5" to 7" blade, a bit more is ok too), fixed blade?

The consideration is for it to be very light weight, but sturdy enough to be able to be used for self defense, so a 'wonder steel' is ok too.

Kinda of a different question, but related: Are there any larger fixed blades that are slightly curved on the side, so it might more discreetly blend in along the belt line under just a teeshirt?

wow, that's a great option, never seen that before, thx.

At 11.6oz its still pretty hefty, I was hoping to find something maybe a bit less overbuilt, probably about half that weight, if that's even possible.

I'm thinking something closer to this:
Cold Steel Kobun Tanto Fixed Blade Knife (5.5" Satin) 17T, 4.4oz

What if I get a big antique Scottish Claymore. If I wear a kilt can I nay wear the blade upon me back?

Those Spyderco's are super, I almost forgot they even make fixed blades. I really like that french "street bowie", that checks all the boxes, thanks!

After looking at Spyderco's lineup, I found this wharencliffe thats really sharp (no pun intended). Appears it retails for $155, but lots of places selling it for $115. I found these two places selling it for even less, anyone trust these websites, or like/hate this knife?

I just checked out that knifesilo website on this other website, it looks legit, I'm going to buy it and check out some other knives I've had my eye on. Thanks everyone. Case closed. :D

This is what I use when kayaking in FL in shark and alligator country. It is 113/4 long, weighs 12 oz and is tempered and coated to withstand just about anything.

Knife Center is good to go, bought a few from them. The Ronin is the fixed blade version of the Yojimbo 2. Very nice knife for the money.

I remember reading/watching that Yojimbo when it came out a few years ago, was over my budget back then.

Thanks for the catch, I'm sticking with Knife Center, they are much better known, and I trust them.

Knives are tools. What exact purpose are you looking for and what kind of training do you have to use it? Looking for a fixed blade to beat up in general bushcraft, that you can ALSO use for defense is very different than a fixed blade to carry concealed only for the purpose of contact distance defense. For the later, something like a kabar TDI or shivworks clench pick would fit the bill better.

Here's a solid combo. Benchmade socp complete with sheath and trainer

Any time "defense" comes into play, it changes things dramatically. A knife good for utility, nice belly, wear resistant steel, thin grind isn't neccesarily good for defense. The design can come down to specifics of your training, strong side slashes and stabs, PMA's angles and grips, or something more limited. Personally a couple PMA classes, and a few years of BJJ point me to something small and secure as a weak side backup to a handgun. I prefer Karambits for the control, secure grip, and their inherent compliment to grappling. For daily EDC, folders are a lot easier to deal with in a 3-4" blade, 2-4oz. Fixed blades make sense around 5", the Benchmade Bushcraft series is awesome for a nice utility knife, eese, morakniv and Tops makes some good stuff that will work for a variety of tasks depending on budget.
