I found an accurate load in my 45-70, hornady 350gr FP and IMR4168. Around 2000fps.

I shot two deer this Friday. Neither one had any blood trail. One, I saw fall, shot the other, and didn't see where she went. She only went 50 yards, but didn't find her till daylight.

Both were behind the shoulder. Thinking of trying barnes. I sent to Tx. and shot a boar with same combo, and went out face and out the hind. Blew the hind out.

My best all around load is a 300gr Sierra JHP with H4895 just about your velocity.Golf ball size exit wounds on the 3 I have taken in the last couple years. They didn't go more than 30 yards with nice blood trails.

I have some. Last I tried, I tried with 3031, and got horrible results. I might have to try a new powder.

alot of the blood trail depends on how / where shot . higher takes longer to " fill the cavity " . depends on angle and depth.

    Hornady 325 FTX!

Both factory and 58.5 H335 hand loads with the Hornady 325 FTX in my Marlin. You have to trim the brass to 2.045" for an overall length 2.585" for it to function in a lever action but worth the effort.
Shot a nice buck 50 yards opening day, went in one shoulder and came out opposite shoulder, nice hole, not excessive damage.
The 300 FN and 350 HP shoot good, about an inch and a half @ 100 yd. but the FTX is so much better!

Cast Performance 405 gr WLNGC and Reloader 7 powder, right at 1600 fps.

The only game I've taken with this load, was a 350+ lb wild hog.
Shot it at about 25 yards.
    "Boom! Thump."

Shot it right above the right shoulder, and the heart and both lungs were pulverized.
It did not take one step.

The 45-70 is an accurate cartridge! I have a Browning 1885 that will shoot one hole groups @200 if I let the barrel cool. I had other guys at the range telling me 45-70 success stories as well. Everybody has a different favorite powder though.
Boom thump, you got to love it, and the target only has one hole in it, you can use it again!

    100yds No Scope 2.5 in.group

I traded in my 30/06 40 years ago for a 45/70. I have owned many different flavors of them. About 20 years ago I settled on a Henry. I have never used scopes always used iron sites. The target has a 4-inch bull the groups are 2 to 2.5 inches. I have shot everything from bear, elk, white tail, mule deer, hogs and a couple alligators. I load my own depending on what I am going to hunt. Elk and bear I use a 480/500 grain bullet. White tail in MD I use 300 to 350 grain bullets. Last year I started casting my own heads with great sucess. The attached target was my first using cast heads.

I killed some deer with my 458 Socom with FTX. Also didn't have great terminal performance. But the 458 Socom shoots ems quite a bit slower at 1600fps.

The best terminal performer I had was the 300gr nosler partitions, which don't make anymore.
