Hello, I am new to reloading. I want to reload some .357 caliber rounds but all I could find were the CCI 500 primers. My load data states to use the CCI 550 primers. Can I use the 500’s and if so, what can I expect?
Appreciate any help one could offer.

I'm assuming you're loading for 357 magnum. It depends on the type of powder you are using. I typically use cci 500s for general plinking loads with non-position sensitive, fast burning powders. For magnum pistol powders, you'd like to use small pistol magnum primers to assure a cleaner and complete burn.

Some powders like W-296 and H110 require the magnum primer according to Winchester data. It's in the manuals and powder catalogs although it takes some digging and reading **foot notes to find it.

You can also post where you are, what you want to trade in the Barter thread of the Reloading section.
    Ex:
    WTT : I have 200 CCI 500 and I want 200 CCI550

If you tell the group what powder (or powders) you plan to use/are considering then we can give you more help.

Barring that, I can say Alliant Powders’ load data for the .357 Magnum in 125 gr and 158 gr Gold Dot HP lists CCI 500. This applies to the following: Unique, 2400, Power Pistol, and Blue Dot. 158 gr data is here: http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/recipedetail.aspx?gtypeid=1&weight=158&shellid=28&bulletid=38

Other sources such as Lyman Pistol & Revolver Handbook 3rd edition specify CCI 550 for their tested loads, including the ones with Alliant’s powders like 2400 and Blue Dot. So, there’s a little conundrum.

Give more info like powder and bullet weight, and this group can offer better help.

“And there’s just one more thing” as that TV detective used to say. Care to share the source of your load data, too?
