New to reloading 30-06. Plan is to get a RCBS 2-die set and reload some RP cases and some CMP "HXP" brass.

Like to load 165g Nosler AccuBond for deer hunting (Remington 700).

Like to reload for M1 Garand plinking, not sure of the bullet.

I'm thinking IMR 4064 or 4895 for both.

Appreciate any advise/pitfalls to watch out for.

Both are good powders. The IMR 4895 has been the go to powder for the M1 for generations.

For the M1, bullets in the 150 – 168 range adhere to the conventional wisdom. Some plinking loads use 125 grain bullets.

The HXP brass will need the primer pocket reamed to get rid of the crimping dimples. Your Rem 700, if it has a tight headspace, may not like the HXP.

The Hornady Manual has Garand specific loads.

Both are great powders I used 4895 for my M1. Runs great with the 155 and 168 I usually shoot.

As mentioned hxp is great brass though you likely have some trimming to do.

    Any questions reach out.

The guys recommending 4895 are correct for the M1 but there are other powders that do better with bolt actions in 30-06. 4350 is probably the most versatile up to 180 gn bullet. 4831 works for 185-200 and H-414/WW760 works for 150 grainers.

The bullet you plan to use is pretty dear considering you are using it on a deer.

Some rifles chambered for 30-06 can be found in 1 in 12 rather than the standard 1 in 10 twist. That would make a difference in the bullet/powder choice.

In the bolt rifle, if you're going with 165 grain bullets for hunting, I'd look hard at IMR 4350 also.

I like 4064 for a lot of reasons, particularly for it's versatility across a variety of cartridges. But in 165 and 180 grain in '06? Gotta agree with John above and 4350 as that's what I've found as well.

    I reload HXP
Definitely get something for the pockets.
I got the RCBS swager die set. Come with one for large and one for small. Many of my range pick up 223 needs swaging too.
I test them by hand and toss the good ones in one pile and the other pile gets swaged

I would suggest using a light hand on the RCBS primer pocket swagger or, better yet, cutting the crimp out with a chamfering tool. If you only shoot when hunting, disregard this as you don't shoot enough for this to matter. if you range shoot a lot, your primer pockets will open up faster using the RCBS tool if you swage until the ram stops. The RCBS tool makes it very easy to get a primer in the pocket but it actually swages more than it has to. I shoot quite a bit and find my primer pockets stay tighter longer if I cut out the crimp rather than swage it.

    Just my .02.

I used 155 grain hornady a max moly coated until they didn't make em regularly anymore in my 06 Remington bolt action with varget powder. I just am switching this year to nosler 165 grain accubonds because I have seen the wound channels in deer with it and I believe that is some of the best hunting bullets ive seen. But I am using varget in the nosler loads also with good success. One hundred yards throws nice groups. Sorry I'm not in to measuring moa etc like most people. :lol2:

I tend to run IMR 3031 with a SMK 168, but I do know that IMR 4895 will work with a 168 SMK. You can also use W748, Varget, and may others with a 168 SMK.

Load data from Sierra 5th edition.

In both my M1 Garand and Remington 700, W-748 works VERY well for Sierra 165 GameKing and 168 gr MatchKing boolits.
(Actually, my old "club gun" from years ago ran really well with W-748. My personal M1 prefers H-4895. It shoots with this powder, just a little better than 748.)

Just for kicks and grins, I use 47.7 grains (W-748) and Winchester brass.

Full length resize to SAAMI cartridge minimum for the Garand. Boy do they grow too. The obvious primer advice. Double check for full seating and maybe consider one recommended for the Garand which I think has harder/thicker cups and are less sensitive.
