My son just bought a sporterized Mauser 98 chambered in .45-70.

Does anyone have any experience with one of these?
I'm wondering whether we should hand load ammo in the Springfield Trapdoor range or if the Mauser action is stout enough to handle what a Marlin 1895 handles?
I haven't seen it yet but he said it is in very good shape.

The Mauser can push a 200 grain 8mm bullet at 2,500 FPS. 49,000 CUP.

I would feel comfortable shooting 300 grain 1895 Marlin loads at 2,100 FPS. 21,000 CUP.

it can handle mid lever loads that exceed that of the trapdoor.

No experience but will be interested to see pics. I would be concerned with feeding since the 45/70 is such a large straight wall with a rim, I would think that the mag well and bolt would need to be heavily modified.

Based on a 98 action I would think it would have no problem with full power 45/70 loads, your shoulder might though.

Gibbs Rifle Co down in WVA used to sell a nice Siamese Mauser in 45-70.

Large Ring Action is perfect for 45-70 and it an handle most if not all modern meplat loads like Buffalo Bore.

I don't have any experience with the "Siamese Mauser", but, I've done some loading for the .45-70 Gummint.

This load was used in my Marlin 1895G Guide Gun, and is VERY accurate, but, STOUT on the shoulder.

Cast Performance 405 gr LWNGC boolit. (Fantastic boolit, btw!)
    Alliant (formerly Hercules) Reloader 7 (aka/ RL-7). 42.5 grains.
Federal once-fired brass. (I also used virgin Remington brass with great results.)
    Winchester LR primer.
    Moderate crimp.

This load (to me) is stout. I settled on 40.0 grains for my go-to load.
(Good velocity. Fantastic accuracy. Not so brutal on the shoulder.)

With 42.5 grains in my 1895G, it's about all I want to shoot.
The 40.0 grain load runs right at 1660 fps. Not sure on the 42.5 gr load. Should be close to 1900 or 2,000 fps, I THINK.

RL-7 yields very good results, with lower pressures than other powders, like IMR 3031.

As Threeband said , back in the day , there were Siamese Mausers origonally chamber for a very obsolete large rimmed ctg. For a while they were popular for converting to .45-70 , by both individual 'smiths and Gibbs .

They were considered at least as strong as Ruger #1 , and suitable for loads listed for such. For a while they were even listed as "Ruger & Mauser loads" .

Also as mentioned by Bfy43 , many .45-70 load at Marlin/ Win86 levels are good combinations of power and recoil.

Here are a few Odds & Ends:
The first published description of a "45-70 Mauser" occurred in a Shooting
Times magazine article in the mid '70's. It was a custom conversion of a
Siamese Infantry Rifle by a smith in Chadron, Nebraska.

These bolt action rifles were made pre-WW2 at Koishikawa Arsenal,
Tokyo for the Siamese Government caliber was 8mm Siamese, case was
    similar to a French Lebel.

Actions and bolt face required a minor amount of "work" to allow feeding
three 45-70 rounds from the magazine. Actions were re-barreled for
    45-70.

In the mid 70's Navy Arms in Ridgefield, NJ offered complete rifles in
    45-70 to the public.
