Only once when I owned an Uzi and a BAR. When we were shooting at a farm the neighbors heard the automatic fire and called the Sheriffs. Several showed...the Sergeant was a family friend. I showed them the ATF paperwork and tax stamp and they were satisfied and they left to talk to the neighbors. We would have allowed them to shoot with us if they asked.

I have had people talk about calling them on me/us. After I told them I could care less if they did... they never followed through. There are many stories of people who have. It usually does not tend to be a huge issue. Not a lot of guys with MGs sticking around to talk to the Cops if they have illegal guns... so if you stick around, the Police tend to already know its not illegal.

Would a suppressor help reduce the chance of a nuisance call to the police?
    Good suppressors make good neighbors.

I once had a county cop show up because a 'new' neighbor close to my uncles farm (moved from the city) come by, but when showed all was legit he left.
On another note, when I had my AC556 and a friend had a semi auto VZ (model I can't remember) fired his with thumb in belt loop (i.e. bump stock like) and he emptied his magazine faster than I could empty mine in FA!
It was at this point I decided to save myself the $10 aggravation fee the state was charging at the time and sold my FA items. I figured if worse came to worse I could always 'bump fire' for suppressive needs should that be required and be better off financially (no more annual registration fee, less ammunition wasted, no need to remember the paper work when going to the range). Also fewer and fewer places to shoot these items these days.
I still have my semi-auto Gatling...

The only time I was visited by the Sheriffs department was at a quarry in NC in the '70's. They made a quick exit from their cruiser and quickly proceeded to ask if they can try it.

It was a '28 Thompson and I let them shoot a couple of sticks through it.

I was asked already by the cops to try some stuff out once while working at their range.
It was AA county near Davidsonville as I recall.
Im guessing they dont do that sort of thing any longer.
I wonder if they still have what they had in their inventory?
If they dont, hopefully one of them ended up with it at their house or in their personal collection.

Was it a tri pod mounted Maxim/Vickers MG by any chance? :innocent0

Maybe, it depends on what you are shooting. Supersonic is still going to crack loud and the frequency is still the same.

For 22LR and 9mm suppressor on FA are nice. On 223... its not really that worth doing, loud and really cooks the suppressors quickly.

No, they had M1928 both GI and CIv, M16 A1,Some form or derivative of AK patterns and a sten. UZI Grease guns and very small SMG's that I cannot remember make or was able to identify.
The officer that was there said they were familiarizing themselves with arms they may encounter on the street.
Now that I'm writing and thinking about it some of the things that were there may been from the FBI.
There was a whole table full of things to choose from.
Believe it or not, some of the guys on the crew weren't interested in trying anything out!
Frickin knuckleheads. We were in behind some short range target butts shaking down that single phase pole line and just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
They were waiting for us to come out for head count before the show.

    Yeah. I can't imagine a can on a 1919 or worse, a MG42.

Especially something crew served you’d likely want stellite and both to larger volume than normal for the caliber and also do something to cool faster. Like ribbing, fins or similar to greatly increase the surface area. Heck, you could design a double tube system with passive/active cooling like a Lewis gun where the muzzle blast pulls air forward between the inner and outer sleeves of the suppressor.

Not what you’d want to normally carry around, but a 3lb or so air cooled jacketed suppressor would be F-ing awesome and likely stand up to a lot of belts of ammo.

Ever had the cops called on you? How did that go.

Not an owner but the couple on a “farmette” neighboring a farm I used to caretake in So AA County called 911 when an old partner brought his AC556K-64 01E and a MAC in .45 ACP over one lunch hour.

A third one and I can’t recall what that was. Possibly a rimfire. My partner, “Danny” also mentioned his desire to start thinking about getting ready to contemplate maybe someday considering selling the AC556 and MAC so he could buy something else and “would you like to try them out?” “Sure,” says I. :innocent0 Evening shift.

It was that 10” Ruger that did it. We had our fun and were packing his trunk up to return to work when a string of blue bubbles sticking up past a hedgerow down the country lane I lived off caught my eye. Finally, one of the marked cruisers going like 2mph inched down the road and into the entrance of the driveway, driver wide-eyed as Opey Taylor when we waved him up the driveway.

That lead to him summonsing the others, most of whom didn’t exit their vehicles, as my partner displayed all the necessary ATF paperwork for each firearm. It was evident they had positively NO idea what they were looking at, with respect to either the firearms or the paperwork. I remember feeling kind of sorry for them in that respect. They were clueless anyone other than their own swat guys could even handle such items.

Which is right about the time they mentioned that was precisely who were “on their way here, right now,” from Crownsville, possibly with the same contingent, from MSP. And, possibly something about, “a helicopter.” “Our supervisor says we need you guys to wait here til they arrive.”

We were like, “WTF did you just say? We’re on our lunch hour, we need to get back to work, here’s our business cards and feel free to tell whomever to call us later. Bye!” The poor uniformed guys were like, “Uh ... duh ... uh ...

We went about our business and late, late that night learned our returning to work led to whomever was the Station Commander for the Southern District at the time trying to file a formal complaint against us. Seriously. Our own IAD told us the prick sounded like a shrill old woman screaming into the phone. Circa 1990 so I’ve no idea what the term for a male, uniformed “Karen” was back then. But, from what I learned in the ensuing weeks from some shooting acquaintances with the AAPD and MSP I’d go with “Southern AA District Commander” at that time, fer sure. Name probably was Ken, that’d be an irony.

Anyhoo, as it turned out, that g*dd*mn ACC556 10” bbl was SO loud the 911 operator actually heard it for a second while the neighbors were on the phone with them. That turned into someone in the chain of communications inserting an assumption that currently-feuding biker gangs in So AA County / Northern Calvert County were having “a battle out” on the vacant land under the BGE power lines that ran alongside all the properties involved. “Yeah, lets go with THAT” and all of a sudden it wasn’t such a stretch to see how either AAPD or MSP felt it necessary to kick off a SWAT response and that bit about some agency’s helicopter turned out to be true ... :sad20:

Anyhoo, ASAP the next morning I made sure I reported everything to the retired couple who owned the now non-working farm and who are in Myrtle Beach (the real authorities in all this, they were my landlords!). Originally from East TN and a retired iron worker he was pissed the neighbor had the temerity to not reach out to him directly, before calling 911. (Turns out the neighbor did try but called the Lothian house number and not the number to the Myrtle Beach residence (this was way way before cell phones).

Oh, I probably should mention and the land owner is my bro-in-laws Father and Mom who were doing me a solid providing me with a roof over my head at same time I was doing them a favor keeping an eye on their MD property while they golfed 6 mos every year. So, I receive orders to go apologize and “make things right“ with the neighbors who’ve been told to expect me.

When I get go their house the evening or two after “the incident” THINGS FROM THEIR SIDE KF THE STORY BECAME EVIDENT TO ME. Turns out they had recently adopted two Doberman puppies and those 2 puppies were in a back bedroom with the door closed and an open window facing exactly in the direction we had been firing that AC556 into a dirt berm.

There. Was. Not. A. Shred. Of. Drywall. Paint. Or. Wallpaper. Intact. Inside. That. Room.

Turns out for the 20 or 30 minutes we were shooting, unbeknownst to us, those puppies were literally climbing the walls!

So, in the end, EVERYONE - including my old partner - wound up PISSED AT ME!

That was the end of my interest in 10” Mini-14’s and that is all I have to say about that. :)

Is it weird that this read like a Christmas story to me lol “and the next morning Santa brought everyone fully automatic weapons without having to pay the tax stamp.”

With a couple of friends SW of Houston at a quarry with FA ARs and a UZI. One of them was friends of the owner. A deputy pulls up after about an hour. The guy who knew the owner talked with the deputy for a minute or two (he also ran a gun shop), he fired off a few rounds off with us and went about his business.

It was a kinder, gentler time.

I am close to the Baltimore County Line. Had someone call the police. Full auto fire is not permitted in Baltimore County, but no problem in Carroll County. It was a real quick conversation, and the officer told me to have fun and be safe and went on his way.
