I think there was more hunters then, but more small game hunters. Deer were harder to come by and see. I remember seeing deer as a kid in the late 70's in the woods and they were rare enough the family thought I was kidding.

Maybe, pheasant was a big deal. I loved those wild chickens! Hagerstown area was a pretty hot spot but now they're all gone. I've heard it was because of change in farming practices, IDK if that holds water. I think it was more rabbit too.

The old farmers said it was the change to No-till that finished the Pheasants and quail. Which would probably mean the roundup or other burn sprays they use.

I grew up rabbit and pheasant hunting right out my back door plus the farm behind our woods. The pheasants went away when most farms plowed over their hedge rows for a couple of additional tillable acres. Those pheasants loved the hedge rows. Between this loss of their preferred habitat and the rampant over population of foxes, we’ve lost all the pheasants. Loved running those woods and that farm with my knucklehead beagle back in the day. Sometimes we jumped a deer, and couldn’t wait to tell everyone we knew that we saw a deer.

Patuxent SP was swarmed yesterday. Went in early and fairly deep, only saw a fox. By late afternoon 330 or 4pm when I was getting optimistic had a "still" hunter come by... including one who saw my setup from back behind and then basically walked a grid pattern 50yd by 150yd in front of me.

I relocated at that point and counted 12 more people on the mile and change to new spot...

Parking lot apparently was full and then some in afternoon. Trying elsewhere today and not going back there for firearm season again unless it's horrible weather or something.

I got 3 this morning, with 3 shots. Shot all of them in about 2 minutes time. Fun morning!
I’m hunting a farm where they want all the deer gone. My freezer is now full, but I have a few friends always willing to take a deer or 2 from me.
Hopefully, I’ll get some more this evening.

Forgot to post Wednesday night at last light about 38 yards out. Not bad in last light with a bow. Saw nothing yesterday with the rifle. Hoping tonight yields something, the OleLady has me beat 3:1 so far on the season, I need to catch up

My oldest (12), took his first buck this afternoon. Good sized six point, after getting skunked for junior hunt and the five other times I’ve gotten him out this season. He is seriously stoked!
