Has anyone shortened the chamber length on a precision 22 to reduce the freebore? Bought a barrel for my CZ 455 that they brought the tip of the bullet closer to the lands. Curious about the results if anyone has done it.

Use a headspace gauge. You don't want to have the chamber be excessively tight. My CZ 455 was head spaced to the bolt. You shouldn't have to shorten anything.

I’ve seen people do this on 10/22 with factory barrels. I think it was in rimfire porn web site

Yeah, i found some info on rimfire central as well about it. Figured I'd ask the group. If it doesn't spec our right I'll likely just need to order a whistlepig barrel.

If this is the mod I'm thinking of, it has nothing to do with throat geometry.

The 10/22 headspaces on the bolt face recess. The common practice is to mill off a small amount of the bolt face to reduce the depth of the recess and make headspace tighter. This is intended to improve consistency of ignition by reducing free-play between the case rim and bolt face recess, and thus doesn't affect the chamber length.

When I had my gunsmithing business, I used to do this for 10/22 shooters regularly before places like volquartsen and taccom were in existence. It is a cheap way to get better accuracy, if you know what you are doing. ;)

There was a guy on rfc doing accuracy mods, and shorting the barrel on the tenon end was part of the process. He did some beautiful bedding work also. DJ maybe? If you post over there in the cz forum you will get exact dimensions for what is best. They are very free with help. It’s a friendly place, the cz forum anyway.

They cut the chamber end off a bit, machine the snout back to factory specs and put a match chamber in

Get the WP barrel. I have 2 and they both shoot dime size groups at 50yds. One is on my 10/22 and the other on my CZ 455. The weight reduction is worth the price and the accuracy is as good as you can get with 22LR. They both love Eley biathlon ammo.
