Great comments everyone. Leaning towards plugging him. You think .22 is enough or should I use something a little more powerful? I have a 270 with a nice scope that should do the trick, but if I could use something a little less loud it might be better.

I've taken several with a .22 but they were all head shots and I was fairly close.

If you have a .17HMR, or know someone that will loan you one, a buddy of mine swears by them.

Head shot with a .22 is fine. I can kill them with a head shot out of my PCP air rifle inside of 25 yards with no problem. I agree that you don't want them around. They will undermine your foundation and rain will erode it and cause your slab to crack. Been there, done that. :mad54:

I have killed plenty with a .22 out to about 60 yards. Headshots preffered. Should be no problem for one in your back yard.

I whole hardily concur with having it succumb to lead poisoning at high speed.

This topic reminds of something that happened some years ago. I have the opinion; they don’t bother me; I don’t bother them. One summer I was overrun with them. Between the holes, digging under the outbuildings, driveway embankments, they had to go.

I was dropping one almost every day for probably eight weeks. Whenever I dropped one it would be gone by the next day. One morning I saw one in the back yard out the pantry window. It was a matter of grabbing a rifle, opening the window, done. A couple of hours later I heard a thump on the roof. Then another. When I looked out the window, I figured out what the noise was. The buzzards were landing on the roof, checking out the menu, then coming down to dine. I decided that was the end of the season. I didn’t want to have buzzards roosting at my place.

Well don’t you know about a month later I had a chance to talk to my back neighbor. He asked me about the buzzards. I asked him what does he mean? He said for about two months his property was overrun with buzzards. They were roosting on his house, on his deck, in all the trees, on the outbuildings, everywhere. He said there had to be over a hundred of them. He said it looked like something from an Alfred Hitchcock movie. His wife was afraid to leave the house. He said they finally left about a couple of weeks ago.

Apparently, they were roosting at his place till they heard a shot. For them it was the dinner bell. They would come and eat, then go back to my neighbor’s place. And no, I didn’t tell him about my activities.

Based on your avatar, just pretend it is Tommy Bucks.

Then, later: "gee honey, I don't know what ever happened to Mr. Groundhog."

I will be the voice of reason :) our neighbor used to say don’t kill anything you don’t plan on eating. Yes he ate groundhogs

The little ones are pretty good. I have never eaten a big one. My MIL has a huge one in her back yard I'm going to try to kill this weekend. I may give the big guy a try.
Grandfather caught one in a trap last summer in NC. I killed it, cleaned it, and made a wonderful crock pot stew. Tasted like roast beef . Enjoy
Yep. That's the only way I've ever eaten it, but it's damned good.

They tunneled under my front porch and also backyard looked like swiss cheese. I used this conibear trap to get rid of them on my property. Make sure you also get the set tool

I've thought about conibear traps. They work great because the animal is killed instantly and remains trapped. Unfortunately, I live in a residential neighborhood with "stray" cats that all have been spayed and neutered and adopted by the community, including my wife.

I shot and killed 3 chucks last year with my bow. Two ran under my ground level deck and died, while the third went under my shed. You would be surprised how little they stink! In one case, I know for sure, the carcas was dragged out from under my deck and carried away. You could see the trail of magots left behind (think I already mentioned that). The other one under my deck started to stink a little so I poured bleach through the decking and the smell all but vanished.

My neighborhood doesn't have any stray cats. I live in a residential neighborhood too. I don't know why.....

WTF....it against the law to trap and relocate? Wrong! Let it be....I have one been here under the shed....now no more raccoons here. They mind their own business and no they are not destructive....unless you have a field of horses or cattle.....its a sin to kill anything unless you need it for food. Its just life consider yourself lucky....

Are you gonna pay the bills for the destruction of property?
