Looking at one in a hock shop, will probably trade a not so great 30/40 Krag with dies, brass and 40 rounds of reloads. He's frothing at the mouth for the ammo and I've traded with him before and happy with the deal.

Question is... how good is the 700 BP, I don't think it's the ultimate, this uses a 209 primer which I'm happy with. He wants 400 for it.... someone that actually owns one.... what do you think about it?

Google it. Remington, Savage and someone else made them for a short period. As I recall, the Savage was the best of the lot because it could use smokeless powder as well as BP. I was never a Remmy fan so I don't know much about them outside of a M1917 and a MN91.

Did all that, wasn't satisfied so that's why I'm here asking. Hoping to find first hand experience.

I had one and it shot good. Barrel was eat up and still shot good. It corrodes easy and fast so you will have to keep up on that

I have the late 90s-early 00’s version. It was pre 209, #11? Caps.

    There is/was a conversion kit. I didn’t get it.

That thing in a shooter with sabots. My 700ml is 54c. 150 no problem.

The takedown was a bit of a PITA, but you get use to it. BTW, the older version is STOUT! Sure ain’t a mountain rifle. Or even a regular 700, as far as weight goes.

Not sure how the price compares in the used market.

The only thing I regret is not getting the 50. I really do like the 54, but the 54 has fallen by the wayside and the sabots must be purchased via internet, where as the 50 stuff is available locally. (Or was, pre RONA. Haven’t checked recently)

I had one. Very accurate! It’s heavy and is half a pain in the ass to clean. No reason for a bolt action muzzle loader. I like my TC Impact for half that price.

Good info. At 400 it sounds high and for a functional 30/40 with goodies I'm giving up too much.

At the very least it “sounds” as if he may be applying his asking / selling price to what he’s offering up but eyeing your end of the deal with what he usually likes to pay - in order to leave some room for him to mark it up after you’ve left. On one hand, he’s trying to run a business and make a living and I respect the overhead many small businesses have to endure.

That said I’ve had more than a few what started out as and were supposed to be “trades” go south because somewhere after the first time the word “trade” got used it never got mentioned again and the dealer was simply asking / expecting too much.

But then, I totally svck at horse trading which is probably why I don’t do it much ...

    Best o’ Success!

Knowing when to walk away is the key, I LOVE horse trading. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose but getting a fair deal is good enough.

Remember, a person to person sale, they are looking for an even trade, usually each party wants the other item and each party is happy.
A shop needs to buy low and sell high.
It would be worth it to him if it was worth $400 and your item was say worth $600-$700
BTW, what shop would buy reloads? Unless he is going to break them down and sell them as components.

Picked up a used 700ML Stainless a few years ago. .50 caliber.

This one had a cheap, no-name scope on it, but, it SHOOTS!
Sabot rounds (T/C Shockwave if memory serves me) w/ (2) Pyrodex pellets and CCI 209 primers, it'll put 3 shots into about 1-1/2" at 100 yards.

My youngest son took his 3rd deer (4 pt) w/ this ML. Eighty yards. Dropped it, where it stood.

    Personally, it's a good-looking rifle, but, I like the T/C Triumph, more.

Good thing about the R700 ML is that their nearly waterproof at the breech.
Last one I had it had a broken bolt handle so I welded a M1917 bolt handle to it and it was cool as cat sh(*t when done.
Dam thing nearly went right on it was so close. I gave it to a guy that needed a good rifle for deer hunting.

I’ve had mine since 1994 or 1995. 700ML, Black synthetic with stainless, 50 cal. It was the first gen model, came with #11 cap, but I got the 209 primer conversion kit. Shoots great, most consistent shooter I’ve ever owned, never have had to adjust the scope even 1 click since sighted in. Have a relatively inexpensive Bushnell 1.5-4.5 scope on it, and have taken deer out to just shy of 140 yards on more than one occasion. I shoot Hornady XTP 240 gr 44 cal sabots, with 100 gr of Pyrodex (not pellets). Wanted to change load this year, want to go back to full 50 caliber bullets over more powder, or different powder like Blackhorn. The problem is I ordered my new bullets in September and they just came last week. If you get the chance to pick one up, you won’t be disappointed.

IIRC a year or two after I got mine, they came out with a newer model and possibly(?) called it “magnum” or something - maybe it allowed a heavier powder load (according to my owners manual 120 grains was max for mine). I may be misremembering this part, but I’d advise you to check the build date and max load recommendation.

This shop will buy my reloads, ammo is SCARCE in the two I was at today. Being hock shop if he doesn't keep them for himself it's shoot at your own risk. That's his business, not mine. I did load them at minimum loads beings the Krag isn't known for strength and the gun is about 120 years old.

You are correct on their business philosophy but times being what they are things are out of the ordinary and there is no new ordinary. Both shops were VERY slim on guns, ammo and accessories whereas this past summer they had a ton of neat stuff.

I'm 22 LR rich right now which is thousands of rounds more then he has. I'll sit on them since I know it has to last me for 4 years and I piss it away like water.
