Hi guys, I've come here many of times and always find the answers I need. Except this time, I own an S&W M&P 15-22 rifle. I was wondering if it is legal to have a barrel shroud on my rifle? I know it's illegal for pistols with the great new laws we have.

I've heard that before, but I just don't get it. Lol.

In a press conference, I think it was Sen. (Don't call me M'am) Diane Feinstein*, who tried to field the question to define a barrel shroud. She got ot confused, because she's clueless on things for which she passes laws.

    *might have been Carolyn McCarthy

Barrel shrouds were in the original bill. Frosh said they were dangerous because they kept you from burning your hands when firing a lot of rounds at puppies and unicorns. It was one of the many things we all worked hard to get removed from SB281.

Couple of questions for the OP:

How do you put a barrel shroud on a pistol? (there is nothing in the law that says they are illegal on a handgun, btw)
How will you put a barrel shroud on your M&P 15-22?

Vertical foregrips are illegal on handguns but I've never heard a word against barrel shrouds.

Could the OP be talking about a foregrip?

Where do you draw the line between a wooden handguard as on a Mosin or Mauser, and a ventilated metal handguard, as on some M1 arbines, e.g., and a barrel shroud?

Barrel shrouds would be the ventilated metal piece. Anything else would not be a barrel shroud. The metal thing looks scary. They never ban anything based on function. Only appearance.

I have no clue how they go on a pistol. I just googled barrel shrouds in MD to see if they were legal. Everything you read on the internet is true right? Lol. And I planned on ordering a threaded barrel shroud for my 15-22.

The Sterling L2A3 and the Sterling Type 2 carbine --- which BTW --- the carbine is on O'Mally's banned list, has a cool looking barrel shroud. I was fortunate to buy the 9mm carbine, before the ban became a reality.
