Looking to possibly buy my first SKS and found quite a few offers. Can anyone explain the differences between these and which are better? Any other offers you might be aware of? I was leaning towards the J&G one, but not completely sold yet. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Never ordered from J&G, I hate Classic, and I love SOG.

    Hope this helps.

PS: The Yugo is a fine SKS. Just remember to clean it REALLY well prior to shooting. Or it WILL be a single shot rifle.

I too would go with SOG. Unissued Yugos are nice rifles and SOG is terrific to work with.

Too bad you didn't get bit by the SKS bug years ago when they were a lot cheaper. Even as recently as 2014 you could pick up nice Chinese 56's from Royal Tiger that needed minor stock repairs for $220. This particular rifle is well used and was packed in pounds of grease. But it's accurate as hell. It often comes out to play at Hooligan shoots.

Good luck. Hope you get a nice one. Just keep in mind...SKS's are addictive. You can't have just one... :nono:

    ;)

    Define "better"

Better for what? Home defense? Target shooting? Plinking? More durable? Better as an investment?

My dad had some early really nice Chinese sks's in his safe he is trying to move. Think he is looking for 380. Chrome line barrel, all numbers matching I believe, and C&R

Call me biased, but I think the best bang for the buck is early Chinese. Russian influence, high build quality, chrome bore is a no brained for me. Yugo's don't impress me.

If I'm going to spend that much money I would rather go to a gun show to look for one.
I got mine from Classic Firearms and is quite bit up.

    Thanks, son.
Evan is right. I have some that I would like to move. He has my approval and is authorized to handle any SKS transactions for me.

lets go with more accurate, better quality?

I doubt you will see much relating to objective accuracy comparison. My guess is that this means they are all about the same. Now you will hear tons of subjective opinions on accuracy. Look for an actual demonstration with repeated results.

I like the look of the Yugo, but hate the fact it's not chrom lined and the trigger pull is longer than the Chinese and Russian ones, at least that's what I have encountered.

Unless you plan on shooting corrosive eastern bloc milsurp ammo, not having a chrome lined barrel on an SKS is like not having snow tires on a shopping cart.

The nice thing about the old milsurp with chrome lining (Arisaka, SKS) is that they held up very well over time unlike say a Mosin.
SKS is also a very good SHTF rifle if you want to have something that shooots the same ammo as an AK and you don't have one pre oct1 2013.
I used to but no longer trust Classic. I trust SOG. Buy local when you can.

The Chinese SKS is the best made, in my opinion. If you can find one with the Security Forces markings, you will have the nicest ones ever built. Very tight, stock fits well, already crowned and polished at the muzzle, bolt finish is perfect, little or no trigger creep, etc...
When you research the SKS, you will find a host of issues that certain models may have more than others.
The most important thing is to get one that has all matching numbers. This will indicate that all of the parts have been "fitted" for that rifle.
Many surplus rifles have been reassembled from bins of parts and do not always work as well because less care was taken in reassembly.

As for a vendor, I recently bought my first C&R, a P-64 from Classic. I was very pleased to have gotten one that has never even had a round in the chamber and looks new inside and out! I did elect the "hand select" option.

In my research, I have found both positive and negative reviews on each of the vendors you mentioned. I think there are always a few bad ones on all of them because sometimes it can be a crap shoot! Classic was very pleasant and professional on the phone when I called with a couple of questions.

You will still have fun with a Yugo, especially if you can get your hands on some grenades! LOL Just kidding, of course.

SOG is the best by far. I got a good Chicom SKS from them, while Classic sent me one with a butchered replacement stock. Some called it an Albanian, but it is just a POS stock. And that was with paying a handpick fee. I will never buy from Classic again.

Ok guys. Got three from my dads safe. All appear matching numbers, well used stocks and solid, blue is pretty good to fair. Covered in cosmoline from storage. 1 is spoken for, got 2 left that can go. All should be excellent shooters. I need a picture of your MD DL for my dads C&R logbook. 380 each and that is a bargain for a original Type 56 SKS.
