Just bought a Ruger Precision Rifle in .308 and was looking for setup suggestions. Current plans are Vortex 6-24×50 scope and bipod (obviously) but wanted to know if anyone had any experience with these and has thoughts to offer up!
Thanks!!
I use that same setup, I like it very much. I swapped out the standard Ruger pistol grip for an Ergo “panther” style grip with palm shelf, an Atlas bipod (not shown in pic) and monopod. Assuming you’re using this for long range shooting, a word of caution for you that was imparted to me prior to my first long range class by the instructor: the 20” barrel and the .308 cartridge will hold you back slightly beyond 800 or so yards. The loss of velocity using the 20” barrel will ballistically affect you beyond 800 yards, to the point of increased bullet drop and windage drift (watching firsthand the difference between the trace of the 6.5 CM vs the .308 at those distances was certainly enlightening). Also, if the Vortex scope is a Gen 1 you’ll have the same problem I do, the elevation drum gets max’ed out by 1,000 yards. I’m good to 900 but to get to 1K I need to max turret plus hold over about 1-1/4 mils. I cannot verify this issue goes away with subsequent generations of Viper PST’s. Overall it’s a damn fun rifle to shoot, best of luck with yours. Almost forgot - don’t forget your bubble level for your scope!Just bought a Ruger Precision Rifle in .308 and was looking for setup suggestions. How do you like that monopod?

I don’t really. When I first bought it, I saw them on most long range rifles and thought it was a necessary accessory. After shooting long range for a while I noticed nobody was using them, and my LR instructor said he hated them and recommended I remove it. I use a rear bag always now, and never really used the monopod for any real shooting. How do you like that monopod?
