Saw this on another site... given recent events, having google involved in any posts when not required would probably be best eliminated. Just in general principle :

Just something that I’ve noticed lately, as I use an iPhone for posting stuff.

When googling stuff and posting, lately, and for a while now, if you click the link, then cut and paste, there is a google wrapper around the actual article. On an iPhone, it makes navigating a little more difficult, but it also keeps you “on google” and not the site you may want. There has got to be some benefit to google but i am more concerned if there is more tracking.

Anyway, see how this looks. Here is the same link, one wrapped by google and the other direct.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.macworld.com/article/3398599/make-use-of-old-iphone.amp.html

    And NOT wrapped in google.

    https://www.macworld.com/article/3398599/make-use-of-old-iphone.amp.html

Again, I am not exactly sure what google is up to here, but it’s not usually for my benefit.

Something you may wish to consider when posting links.

If you examine the text of the link, you can see the parts to manually edit out if you want to do it that way.

It’s nothing nefarious nor is it Google doing anything themselves other than caching the pages. These websites are mostly using WordPress which has an AMP plugin that renders a fast mobile version of their website without all the junk JavaScript and CSS needed for desktop experiences. Google is doing the caching of these pages so they load even quicker.

You can learn more about AMP here: https://amp.dev/about/websites/

And Google’s AMP options here: https://developers.google.com/amp/

If you are on mobile and use Google you will likely get AMP links. If you are on an iPhone and don’t want them go under Settings -> Safari -> Request Desktop Website and toggle the “All Websites” switch. It should skip AMP because it will send a desktop user agent instead of the mobile one.

Well, I don’t trust google, and will try to avoid the google wrap / amp stuff... but that is a great bit of knowledge you posted there.

Actually solved one of my most annoying issues with iPhone! Thanks.

Going to a site like imdb or similar, having the site default to mobile vs desktop!

If this is happening when you post a link here on MDS, your PC may be hacked.

If you are posting links from a google search, the following is more likely:
Google charges advertisers to show up first in their rankings. That's why if you google "Yelp Pizza Hut", the first entry might be for Pizza Hut and later in the list is yelp's website.

Yea, I never click on the paid ads.
