No fish but caught one of these yesterday on the beef suet. Cut hook and let him go. Had texture and feel of a underinflated football.

What pound lines are you guys running. I'm used to lake erie crappie, small and large mouth, yellow perch and a couple others. Butt I fear my set up would be too light for catfish

That depends on where you fish and what size catfish you target. If you are fishing an area where there arent many snags, lighter gear is all you need.I have rods lined with 8lb test up to 25lb test.

Out of a kayak and no snags,I caught catfish up to 15lbs with no trouble with 8lb test. But I have had smaller fish tangle me up and break off in rocks and wood.

    What the ?!?!?!? Notify NASA

LOL it's a Eastern Spiny Softshell turtle. Weird looking, first thing I noticed was the nose. Lot of neat critters in the river.

Not real sure I'd want to eat something that ate something sprayed in WD-40. I guess if it never really made it into the bloodstream before you gut it.

WE no doubt eat far worse than a 1ppm of WD every day. Many mechs live a long life and they ingest far worse every day.

i think mine is 5lb test. PLane on fishing around Haines Point. Potomac River. Not aiming for huge fish but possibly some good for frying.

Not familiar with that area but I know people catch some big blue cats from there.Maybe somebody else with more experience can chime in,but I would take heavier gear with 12 lb test as a minimum.

You might want to look up the fish eating advisory for fish from that area before eating any.I'm not sure what it is,but I bet you it isnt great

I haven't tried it yet but I've heard cut raw chicken breast marinated in strawberry jello powder works great.

They are actually pretty rare in MD... not unheard of, but not common by any stretch of the imagination. Got to be careful when handling them... they have serious claws and can cut you up. They also have a pretty significant bite... not quite snapping turtle strength, but they could probably take off a finger if you give them a chance.

    Pretty cool.

Any similar advice for cats in the potamac - ft Washington MD up to DC area? I'm thinking one of my fishing crazy kids might really be amazed pulling up one of those fat fishies... We've never targeted or caught a catfish before.

Was going to make slip rigs with no roll sinkers on 20lb leader, with 20# braid mainline, with either cat treble or circle hooks.

Baitwise I was thinking livers, but I have some frozen cutup mullet from a recent surf fishing trip. Definitely interested in other bait, rig, and water advice.

Some 45 years ago off of Ft. Belvior we used to fish for bait using worms. We would then take the bait, perch or spot, and weave a hook along their spine and use that as bait for the big cats. We caught 15 and 20 lb channel cats and when we cut up the bait and used perch and spot fillets we would catch the smaller cats. Good times when I was in high school.

Razor clams worked well on the little choptank. Strawberry jello chicken caught this interesting iridescent little guy.
