New to me Winchester field grade came last week. Overall I really like it. Been there done that look, with WRA barrel measuring 2/2 and a WRA bolt. Although it’s a pretty nice one I’m not a fan of the birch stock but that’s an easy swap. My only concern is the op rod track(is that the right term?) has more wear then I’m used to. Op rod doesn’t seem to jump out of the track, but should I be concerned with this at all? I haven’t shot it yet but I do plan to shoot it a fair bit so I don’t want it to be a problem. Thanks

How many rounds have you put through it? Was the wear there before or is it new? Is the rifle how it came from the CMP or did somebody meddle with it? It looks like normal wear to me......unless it came out of nowhere and fast.

    Looks like severe abnormal wear.
Don't want that OP rod jumping out of the track and taking your head off.
Might as well sell it to me. I'm willing to take the risk and put up with that ugly birch stock.
I am willing to give you back the CMP price you paid so you don't have to worry about all that wear and danger. That's what MDS members do for each other.

That's pretty normal. Winchester Garands were known for rough matching marks and finishing. It was wartime...get it built...get it accepted by the military inspector...get it shipped. People pay premiums for Winchester Garands and they had the roughest machining.

I had one that had one of those birch stocks, I wasn’t thrilled with it. A friend of mine saw it and had to have it, he loved that ugly stock! :)

The wear looks rough. I’ve not seen one that rough and I’ve seen more than a few

Thanks guys. I appreciate your opinions. Looks like most but not all agree it’s ok. I guess the next step is to put some rounds through her and see how she does. It is straight from the CMP and I haven’t tested it yet. I also know they will make it right if it’s not. I am very happy with it overall though and don’t want to have to send it back. The wear and appearance don’t bother me a bit if it doesn’t affect it. The only thing I was concerned about was function.

You will want to lubricate it before you shoot it. I remember reading on their website stating they dont fully lubricate it before they ship it. There are instructions and video's of how to lubricate it out there.

Yes...Garands have certain wear points to lubricate but historically they're very tolerant of lack of care...they've proven than time and again. The worst thing is if there's a lack of lubrication and they get wet in a heavy rain...that's showed to occasionally cause problems. Then again...I doubt if you plan on taking it into sustained combat.

I've yet to see a rifle sent out by the CMP that didn't meet safety requirements. As others have said, the milling on Winnie M1s was rough and ready. Keep it properly lubed and shoot Garand-safe ammo in it and I doubt you'll ever have trouble with it.

The CMP is supposedly very responsive to customer feedback and honest practically to a fault. Why not send the photos to them and ask the experts?

Lube it and shoot it. I would not worry about that. I have one with a stock like that. I have applied lots of BLO and it has darkened up a good bit over the years. I actually like it now but it doesn’t look as good as a nice walnut

Looks fine. Rough machining is a character trait of Winchesters. Lube, shoot, and enjoy.
