So I decided to refinish my Mosin with a darker color.

    My original stock.

Looking good. Very well done! Aren't these projects fun? What did you use? I'd like that color on some AK wood.

thanks guys, @indy, I used a mahogany poly-shade from Minwax. It's a 2 in 1 stain and polyurethane coating. It was my first refinishing project, and I plan to do more with the same color including an AK whenever I get one(under21).

Ok thanks. And as far as the AK, you can always order the furniture and work on it before you get the gun. Ironwood makes great stuff in case you are interested in the idea.

I refinished my Mosin couple of weeks ago, I removed the original finish with acetone, sanded the stock, used Minwax wood conditioner, stained and sealed it with Minwax in Gunstock color, than applied 7 coats of Homer Formby's Tung oil varnish, polishing with 0000steel wool between applications. I could not be happier how it came out. Going to the gun show in Upper Marlboro this weekend, looking for the next project. I really love that Formby Tung Oil.

Nice color. I like the dark reds, the redder reds (?) look wierd to me on a rifle. I thought about getting one of the Chinese M53's that usually have the really rough stocks and refinishing that in a really dark color - almost black maybe with a hint of red - as long as it doesn't end up purple.

Got any pics? I'd be interesting what that technique looks like. I have a few M44s that I'm looking to refinish.

Did you have any trouble putting the rings back on after refinishing?

Is it easier to soak out the cosmoline if youv'e stripped the stock down to bare wood?

This is what my Mosin looks like after the stock refinish. If you have one of these great afortable rifles, stock refinishing is easy.
