    1. Herndon Town Council passes local gun-control with a twist

On Tuesday night the Herndon Town Council voted 4 to 3 to pass local gun-control. Those opposing any local gun-control outnumbered those supporting gun-control by at least 8 to 1. I spoke, representing VCDL. The Council had received over 350 emails.

The few who wanted gun control all wanted Option A, which was a ban in government buildings, parks, recreation and community centers, and in streets, alley ways, etc. during a town permitted event (with a complete exemption for CHP holders).

The ordinance that passed, Option B, was not requested by any of the speakers. It bans guns only in certain Town buildings, but not in parks, or on streets or alley ways during a Town permitted event. There is no CHP exemption for the buildings.

Mayor Shiela Olem and Councilmember Signe Friedrichs both voted to table all gun control, but they were outvoted by 5 to 2. Both voted against the final measure, too, but oddly, so did Councilmember Sean Regan. I say oddly because he didn’t vote to table the proposed ordinance, but he did vote against Option B at the end. From his comments, he wasn’t pro-gun, but understood that spending all this time and effort on gun control was a waste.

From comments made before voting, it was clear that for the other four members of Council, this was all about making THEM “feel safe.” They banned guns in a host of government buildings, but the town council building is the only one with manned metal detectors. The other buildings will only have signs (which public mass-shooters will appreciate). Sounds like what Fairfax County did back in 1995, before VCDL took them to court and won.

Councilmember Jasbinder Singh, during his comments, asked why anyone would want to bring a gun into a government building. It was a rhetorical question, as no one from the audience could speak at that time. He was worried about political violence. So are WE, Mr. Singh! Sigh.

When elections come up for the Town Council, remember that Jasbinder Singh, Vice Mayor Cesar del Aguila, Naila Alam, and Pradip Dhakal all voted to strip gun owners of their right to self defense in Town buildings.

The ordinance does not go into effect until January 1, 2022 and then only if signs are installed at all entrances to the buildings.

    2. Next week is VCDL’s Gun Owners Voting Early Week!

My wife and I voted early and in person this week. Nothing to it. Just bring any government ID (no photo required). I used my VA CHP, which confused the clerk as I knew it would. ;-)

If you haven’t voted yet, let’s do it on VCDL’s Gun Owners Voting Early Week, which is October 4 through the October 8! Coordinate with friends and family to go to the polls together, perhaps during lunch. Don’t put this off!

From the Virginia Department of Elections website:
    EARLY VOTING IN-PERSON

You can vote early at your local registrar’s office beginning 45 days before Election Day and ending the Saturday before Election Day. Before visiting your local registrar’s office, you may wish to check your registration status or call your registrar’s office. You can find your registrar’s phone number here. To vote early in-person, do the following:

Starting 45 days before Election Day, visit your local registrar’s office or a satellite voting location in your county or city to vote early. Remember, the Saturday before Election Day is the last day to vote early.
You do not have to have a reason or fill out an application to vote early.
At the registrar’s office or satellite voting location, you must provide your name and address and show an acceptable form of ID or sign an ID Confirmation Statement. To view a complete list of acceptable IDs, please visit our page. If acceptable identification is not provided, you must sign an ID Confirmation Statement or a provisional ballot will be offered and you are allowed until the Friday at noon following the election to provide a copy of acceptable identification to the electoral board or sign
an ID Confirmation Statement. Provisional voters receive a notice to remind them of the deadline and right to attend the electoral board meeting.
Accessible equipment and/or curbside voting is available upon request.

    3. IMPORTANT: Gun controllers running a fake campaign to reduce support for Glen Youngkin out west!

Dirty tricks and Dark Money at work in the western part of the state. Looks like the gun controllers are really worried about gun owners turning out in numbers to support Glen Youngkin: https://www.axios.com/democrats-youngkin-virginia-pac-14c70252-56ff-455e-b7a6-6afbdc570332.html
