There is NO requirement for cases to be locked while transporting in maryland.

Not locked, but closed/enclosed. Handguns DO need to be in an "enclosed" holster or closed case in MD. MD is pretty lenient on what consitutes an enclosed holster; basically any retention strap over the top is good to go, even a single loop of leather string.

I was told that if ammo was in the same area with the firearm that is considered transporting a loaded firearm. Have I been mislead this whole time ?

Who ever told you that is full of shit.

Per the MD AG, it is lawful to transport your magazine, fully loaded, in the same case as your firearm, so long as the magazines are not in the firearm.

What about transporting a firearm in the vehicle's passenger compartment, in a latched hard container or zipped bag because, e.g. it's an SUV or truck that doesn't have a trunk?

    Perfectly legal in Maryland.

Does it have to be in the back seat, or "out of reach"? What if it's a two-seat sports car or a Smart Car, without a trunk? Motorcycle? What's the rule?

Still doesn't matter in Maryland, perfectly legal..

This has all been discussed before, with all of the "what if's", all you have to do is search.

When I took my HQL class, the retired LEO teaching the class said:

SUV - Firearms in a locked case/bag, in the rear cargo area.
Pickup w/ crew cab - Firearms in a locked case/bag, in the back seat, on the passenger side (seat or floor).
Pickup w/ only front seats - Firearms in a locked case/bag, on the passenger side floor.

Locked case not required under Maryland statute.

You have to watch setting them on the back seat without a little care.
The seat belts where they poke through the seats can dent a wood stocked firearm unexpectedly if your not careful.
I usually always carry a hooded sweatshirt or Duck jacket that I can cover them up some.
