I'd always heard groundhog was greasy/fatty. What was your dad's secret?

I don't know about his dad but the folks in my family that cook them, and coon and possum, cut the fat which is mostly on the outside of the carcass off and bake on a rack so its not sitting in the grease.

Here's a decent one I got with the ol' B-78 Browning at 172 yds.

Never had them baked. Usually boiled for a while and then fried. They are dark tough meat similar to squirrel. Simmering in a stew pot will soften them up.
Crock pot might be a good way to go as well.

Got this one at 105 yards. Was calling for Coyotes and was about to end the stand when he came out into the field being nosey.

Then this one at 65 yards.

I use a Savage bolt 22mag scoped. Since the hogs are around the pond my longest shot is about 75 yards. The last one was a mommy that came out. After the shot our new Chessy "Guinness" got her first taste of dead animal, she will be learning more in time. Chris

My bluetick did the same thing, not a good idea because:
    1) She thought it was hers
    2) Groundhogs stink, a dog chewing on a groundhog smells the same

Yeah she thought it was her's till the other dogs came a running. Being the new one she backed off. We are now in training mode with her as she is old enough to understand more commands "leave it - where's the bird - drop it". Wendy is working on "soft mouth" and how to pick up game using a dummy then to game. Our old Chessy Bailey would run up the hill on command "Where's the hog" and come back with one most of the time. She pretty much cleaned up that hill. We miss her. The dogs roll in hog S$%6 from time to time, they know it's Febreze time to make them smell pretty. Chris

    Hey Stickey

Tell me about that gun "the varmiter " looks nice.
My farmers haven't cut some of there hay and barley yet? It's so tall elephants could hide in it. lots of rain in June, is messing up some prime hog shooting time now.

I am a little older, 75, and I still have my groundhog gun that I purchased in 1957...a Remington Model 722 in .257 Roberts. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and sold the Weaver 4X that was on it and replaced it with a 3x9 Leupold. Today, I'd probably select an AR Varmiter .223; sold a DPMS Varmiter in 2014.

Been in the new house for almost 3 years now. Just starting seeing groundhogs in the backyard. I've seen 2 or possibly 3 different Groundhogs. Might have to pull out the 10-22 and have some target practice.

    I'm interested in a .204 Ruger.

In the AR platform. Anyone try it?
Almost ordered it a couple of times online, as a complete upper assembly.
For a build on a lower.

I saw an episode on the Travel Channel with Andrew Zimmern where he was in West Virginia. They hunted groundhogs and cooked them in a stew just like you said
