Just so I’m positive before making plans. I can pay $200 for an AOW tax stamp and throw a vertical fore grip on my little 7.5” 300BLK pistol that will never meet the MD SBR length of 29”?

Never mind, I apparently can't read today.

As I understand it, there are more paperwork hoops to jump through with an SBR than with other NFA configurations, in terms of taking the firearm out of state. That would be a drawback for me.

You have to file a Form 20 for each SBR and each state you want to take them to.

One form, each year. No cost.

What happens if you decide to slap a different upper on there? New stamp?

As long as you have the upper that was used to obtain the stamp you are good, as there is no permanent change.

If you were to re-barrel the only upper you have, you are supposed to inform BATFE. No new stamp required.

AFAIK you can slap a different upper on there, as long as it maintains the same length and caliber, or is not an SBR upper (e.g. 16" barrel).

No. You may change lengths and/or calibers temporarily (extra uppers) as long as you keep the original upper to be able to return it to the original configuration.
