New gun tax bill being pushed in CA to tax the sale of handguns and rifles to generate funding for gun control program. So then when you legally purchase a handgun or rifle you're funding gun control.

This tax would also be open added into addition to the sales tax.

Rest assure the Dems in NY, MD, NJ will be pushing this soon. CA is their testing ground.

The two things that Liberals love more than anything...new taxes and a way to increase the burden of exercising your 2A right.

Yep. Name a more iconic duo.

This is some kind of BS. Can't say I'm surprised to see that in Commiefornia though.

One of the pieces of legislation Democrats are looking to quickly pass is Assembly Bill 18, which among other things looks to tax the sale of handguns and semiautomatic weapons in order to generate funding for gun control programs.

The bill, which was sponsored by Democratic Assemblyman Marc Levine, would implement “an excise tax on the sales of handguns and semiautomatic rifles” and then hand over the resulting revenue to the California Violence Intervention and Prevention Grant Program (CalVIP).

It's not an infringement, it's just a tax. You already have to pay a sales tax on your evil gun purchase, right? And that's not an infringement, right? So now that we have established that taxes applied to (evil) gun purchases are not infringements ...

(I wrote that snarky bit before I read the text of AB-18 ... and that's pretty much the logic they use. [/me shakes head, ruefully])

I wonder if you could reasonably argue in court that the sales tax + gun tax + all the other fees one has to pay in purchasing a gun in CA creates a financial hurdle and by de facto acts as an infringement to low income groups, which prevents them from exercising their 2A rights.

They're taxing text messages to raise money for free cell phones to the poor. But taxes guns to keep them out of the hands of the same people. Nice logic.

Of course they'll say "not infringement, just pay up!"

After all, machine guns, SBR's, silencers, and such aren't "infringed". Pay up!

I plugged $200 and 1934 into an inflation calculator and got $3,761.76. Don't show this to California or MD. My next handgun or semi purchase will take a lot more 'splainin to the wife.
