Just about any modern hollowpoint self defense round is going to perform well.

My 9mm is just a fun gun and I don't keep it at the ready for self defense so I usually just shoot Georgia Arms Canned Heat @ $87 per 500.
for plinking the wally world white box winchester works fine, value pack is a little over $15 for 100 rnds.
