Hunting licenses can be purchased effective 8/1. The regulations have to be written early enough to get annual Hunting guide back from the printers in time. At some point the decision has to proceed.

Maryland Hunting Licenses go on sale on 07/01 always have.

I was at Hugg-Thomas Sunday and there was a sign that said no rifles. Does anyone know where to find specific local laws that forbid the use of straight wall cartridges?

The only thing I could find on the Hugg-Thomas DNR site is this "Permitted hunting devices include all legal devices allowed in Howard County."

Since the Public Hunting Areas are regulated by State and Federal laws, I would think it is ok to use a straight walled rifle now that the rules have changed. The current hunting guide from DNR specifically states that Howard County is one of the areas where SWC rifles are allowed.

I hunt a small farm in Harford County. I live in PA. Would I be allowed to hunt with a new 350 Legend AR-15 in HarCo? It probably will not be a HBAR.

I'd double check with DNR to be sure.

I called DNR today and they said I should follow the signs at the location. I asked if this was specific to Howard County but she didn't know. I hunt at Patuxent River a lot which is both Howard and Montgomery. I'm going to try calling the Gwynnbrook Office. Maybe they know, someone has to know right?

In theory someone does. I doubt they’ve updated the signs anywhere. Honestly sounds like she doesn’t know.

If you don’t kind, report back what you hear. I also hunt Patuxent a lot. So it would be nice to know definitively (there aren’t any signs at all other than “managed hunting area” as far as I am aware for Patuxent.

I have a suspicion the answer is going to be can't use. Haven't hunted there, but I'm pretty sure I've seen that posted there for years. Somebody probably shot somebody's window out with a .22 while squirrel or rabbit hunting.

Did you know its illegal to shoot a squirrel out of a tree in Mo County?

Was discussing dumb laws with a DNR Officer.Thats one she came up with.

That one kind of makes sense to me. If you miss the shot with a 22 up at a 45 degree angle, where is that bullet going to land.

I believe that tract was archery only. Maybe they recently changed it and forgot to remove a sign. Don’t get your hopes up to hunting there. It’s reservation required.

    FYI

    Hunting

Public hunting on Hugg-Thomas WMA is permitted during legal hunting seasons with restrictions (see below). A free permit is required and available from the DNR Wildlife and Heritage Service Gwynnbrook Wildlife Office or online. Hunting is available for all legal game species in accordance with current hunting laws and regulations established by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Click here to apply for the free Central Region Public Hunting Permit.
Hunting access is restricted to seasonal permit holders with daily reservations from September through January and during the Spring Turkey Season.
Hunting is permitted Monday through Saturday. No hunting is allowed on Sundays.
The opening day of Deer Firearms Season is drawn by lottery.
From September through January there are 8 reservations available per day.
During Spring Turkey Season, hunters must sign in at the parking lot with their Central Region Public Hunting Permit. Five hunters may sign in at a time.
Permitted hunting devices include all legal devices allowed in Howard County.
Some provisions exist for licensed vehicle use on trails for hunters with a Universal Disability Pass.
Trapping is allowed by permit only. Contact the Gwynnbrook Wildlife Office at 410-356-9272 for more information.

It’s illegal to shoot one with a 22 out of a tree in moco. It isn’t illegal to use shot on one in a tree.

Probably don’t want the moron taking an unsafe shot and dropping a 22 on someone a mile away.

Thanks, John. I think that settles it. Straight wall legal.

Maybe Hugg-Thomas used to be archery only. But it’s been archery, ML and shotgun since At least when I started hunting 5 years ago.

google is your friend, I am not.
I called and the "no rifles" signs are old and have not been replaced. They are in the process of replacing the signs, so check back in a few weeks. The central MD rules specify which tracts are SWC allowed, and which are not. Hugg-Thomas WMA is SWC allowed.

Just called also. Sign was removed yesterday. SWC allowed everywhere except McKee-Beshers. She said there is a local county law that they are working on getting updated to allow SWC. She doesn't think it will be completed this year but will send an update to everyone that has the Central Region free permit. It will also be updated on the DNR websites. They are working on updating all the sites to add SWC is allowed.
