My grandpa showed me his Mark III red dot sight he bought new many moons ago. He still has the original paperwork (of course, he has ALL the paperwork for everything he's ever purchased). It is still listed on AimPoint's website, and lists manufacture between '83 and '86. I thought it was cool, so I thought I'd share.

I had one in the late seventies. I bought it out of a magazine ad. For the life of me, I can't remember what rifle I put it on. The bad thing about it was that it was made in Sweden (I think) and the batteries weren't sold in the US. It was truly revolutionary at the time.

    I have one of those.

The problem is, they were designed around mercury cell batteries. Which have not been available for some 20 years.

There is an alkaline replacement. Mine is probably dead, and the alkaline has probably leaked.

That made me think of the optic we fooled around with in my unit. We had a bunch of Armson oeg sights that mounted on the carry handle of our A2s. This is the closest thing I could find but it's damn close. This was the "shoot with both eyes open" optic, dominant eye sees the fiber optic for while the other eye sees the target. Your brain superimposes the dot on the target for lightning fast shooting.

I have an old Aimpoint like that one on a Ruger 44 Carbine, works like a champ. I bought an Armeson OEG sight at a gun shop in CT, several months ago for like $10 because they didn’t know what it was. Turns out Armeson is still in business.

I seem to recall they are the same diameter at N cells, but shorter.

I need to dig it out and take a look. The alkalines have probably leaked by now. :(

I have a Mark III on my CZ 805 that I picked up at a gun show for $20. It might be old but it still works like a champ. Yes, you can still easily get batteries for them but I forget just what battery it takes. IIRC, it's a common one but you have to strip off the outer layer for it to fit into the battery compartment.

I picked up an Aimpoint 2000 with a bunch of stuff I bought, pretty decent shape and still works. Don't know what I'll do with it

Well, my grandfather just gave me this scope. Now I need to get batteries for it, and find a nice vintage gun to put it on :)

The forerunner of the red dot. The occluded red dot.
I actually had a Mk III. Somewhere I have a pic of me standing in front of a flaming Honda hanging from a tree holding a CAR 15 with said Mk III

What did your grandfather have it on? It seems like it would be at home on an A2, Mini-14 or M1a.

Good question...I don't remember. He may have bought it for a crossbow. He used to build and shoot crossbows a lot.

I have an older Aimpoint... it uses "1/3 N" batteries. They are available online or at Battery Warehouse. Mine is still on its first battery from when I bought it used 15 years ago.
