My friends and I did a white elephant gift exchange over the weekend. It was not my idea, but it was more humorous than I anticipated. One of the gifts was a flag for my buddy to fly on his boat.

The flag got us talking, and one of my friends claimed that it is illegal to fly the Jolly Roger. Seems unlikely to me, but I figured I'd put it to our boaters on here.

So, is it legal to fly the Jolly Roger? If jurisdiction matters, my friend made this claim specific to the Magothy River.

I've seen it on boats out on the Flats.

One boat we lovingly referred to as "Pirate Booty", suffice to say Mom was fitting in the bikini just right that summer. :innocent0

Oh No! Another case of Battered Pirate Syndrome

BPS is almost has bad as BGOS

Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Isn't it sad that some people always scream "illegal" about so many harmless things. They must have wet dreams nightly about government controlling their lives.

AFAIK, it is not illegal to fly it per se, yet you might take one across the bow from a coastie because of it... you know they roll that way.

I don’t think the DNR police nor the coast guard are too worried about pillaging and plundering on the bay.

Not illegal as far as I know. However, on some of the boating forums I frequent there is the occasional snowflake that finds it offensive. All the more reason to fly one.

The jolly roger used to cast fear into the hearts of all who saw it! But after The Pirates of Penzance and the Pirates of the Caribbean now not so much.:sad20:
