I heard it was illegal to lock a pistol in your vehicle in the case you need to go somewhere they are declared unwelcome. Fact or Fiction?

For instance, You go out to pick up a new car battery and there is a "No firearms" sign on the door. By law do you have to take the pistol somewhere to store it and return later, unarmed?

Signs in MD do not have the force of law. (Not talking about government buildings here) If it’s discovered you’re carrying you can be asked to leave and if you don’t you can be arrested for trespassing.

So the real focus of this question is: what are the particulars of a permitted carrier storing the handgun in the vehicle while in someplace you can’t carry (say, the post office).

    Yes.

I was also told if arrested for trespass with that gun (printing or someone sees it etc)you could lose firearms privileges all together.

You'd have to be pretty stupid to get arrested for trespassing in a case like this.
They ask you to leave, you leave and don't get arrested. If you have it well concealed, what they don't know won't hurt them

If you have a MD Law citation/reference for that information, can you please email it to the folks at https://www.handgunlaw.us/ so they can update their Maryland pdf. (See page 6 of the current document: https://www.handgunlaw.us/states/maryland.pdf)

(Generally, that website is generally a great concise and current resource to review before carrying anywhere, and answers general questions like these for each state.)

I can't find the reference now, but there have been prior discussions about the parking lots of post offices also being classified as federal property, so take that into consideration if your question isn't directly answered here.

Not a lawyer, and not a federal employee so take with a heap of salt, but I have been told by a federal type person that at least with their agency the building itself was off limits but the rest of the property was treated the same as the rest of the state. So I believed that I could legally leave something in the car in the parking lot. I would love to hear from an actual lawyer on this.

    e. but of course this was not at a military facility. As far as I know they can and will search your car and don't take kindly to unauthorized weapons.

I never mentioned being asked to leave, these days people do not address those suspected of having a concealed weapon, they would be as stupid as myself. I thought no question was a stupid question but I'll be the village idiot and try to delete the thread.

That was true about my organization as well. After 9/11, we redid our security and put bullet proof windows, cameras, hot buttons etc. to include no firearms ( unless you were on duty or mission required).

During the confusion of 9/11, everyone that owned an AR had it and plenty of ammo in their vehicle.

No Firearms signs don't mean shit, UNLESS Federal building or in COMAR. They don't carry the force of law. If the business finds out SOMEHOW, that you are carrying CONCEALED, then all they can do is ask you to leave. If you refuse, you WILL be arrested for trespassing. Possibly will have your permit revoked for causing undue apprehended danger.

The whole point of carrying concealed is so that you can stand in front of 5 cops and they shouldn't know you are carrying. I have tested this a few times, never once been asked if I was packing.

What about gun free school zones?

My understanding of the federal law is that if a person is licensed they may have the gun unloaded and stored in a locked container within the zone.

However since the law specifies that the restriction zone extends to public lands 1000 from the school property. Does then mean that you have to stop unload and store your gun when driving on a public road near a school within the zone?

We all know we can't carry it into (for example) the post office. But I'll bet I'm not the only one not easily fining a definitive answer to the question: does MD law treat a permit holder differently (leaving restrictions out of it for the moment) than a non-permit holder when it comes to leaving a loaded handgun in the vehicle while the owner is outside the vehicle?

    For those who are curious...

18 USC 930 (a) Possession of a firearm and dangerous weapon in Federal facilities.

    Sentence - 1 Year/$100,000

You're not trespassing until they ask you to leave and you refuse to go. Could be the store manager or the police (if they called them) Once they ask you to leave, you leave. No trespassing.
