ANNAPOLIS — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources says samples from nearly 1,000 deer killed during the 2007-2008 hunting season all came back negative for Chronic Wasting Disease.

The neurological disease is similar to "Mad Cow Disease," It attacks the spinal cord and is fatal for deer. It is not known to be transmissible to humans.

During the past 40 years, the disease has been detected in deer in 14 states, including West Virginia.

Tests on more than 4,600 Maryland deer over six years have found no sign of the disease.
