When if ever, will bear tags just be allotted and available for purchase?

Surely by now they must have enough tagged/chipped to just sell tags and then a certain number of out out of state tags made available.

We have a family member that owns a pretty substantial amount of acreage near Accident.

I wonder how that works for landowner and tags with bears?

Can you just get a DNR ID and check them in like deer or still have to do the lottery?

I never looked in to it.
    Still a lottery.

I'll have to readdress this. It was two years ago when I almost killed myself while bear hunting just outside of Accident(very apropos) and rules may have evolved yet again :o. To the best of my knowledge, you still have to physically take the bear to a check-in station and are still required to leave the sex organ attached to the hide.

ETA: I will read up on this as I am on a landowner's tag this year in Allegany Co.

The owner says he very rarely deer hunts anymore because of the bears. He's a casual deer hunter and says he sees them all the time.

I drove a truck down through the woods one time to the orchard to pick up a deer in Swanton. The truck was almost out of gas.
I was all happy when I got out out to the top, walked around back of the truck, looked in and it was gone. LOL
It was so steep it rolled out on the way up.
I had to walk back in and drag him out anyway but forgot which way I drove from jumping over the rocks and tree limbs and stuff.
Happy Days out there, but looking back I never should have did it.

How many times have we said "...can't believe I just did that..."? :lol2:

Maryland black bear counts are estimated at ~2,000 with 950 permits given out in the lottery this year, an increase of 150 from last year.

Not sure how large last year's harvest was. Obviously not everyone is successful.

No idea how many guys enter, but based on what a lot of the guys here say, sounds like odds are maybe at best 50%. So I am assuming its probably around 2-3k hunters who enter every year.

So just "1 per season", no lottery probably wouldn't be a good thing for managing the number of bears. Unless the goal was to eliminate them (or at least drastically reduce their numbers).

After long time of only hunting Landowner in Maryland , I am hankering to again go elsewhere in Md .

Looking quickly on the 'net , seems to be $24.50 plus $6 muzzle loader . Am I missing something ? Are Deer Stamp a thing again ? Last I bought a Md License , they just came as Consolidated .

All this will change with time, my son. I see $5 for all licenses sometime in your future. :D

I got the basic license, furbearer, bird stamps, ml stamp, and bear lottery for $86ish. First time in the bear lottery, didn't get picked. Works out ok, get to use my vacation time for deer and trapping (have some beaver to get rid of plus the usual critters).

WVA killed more bears last year than MD has in its estimated bear population.
In PA they killed 4500, in WVA like 3100. in VA something like 3500
You should be able to buy a tag for bear hunting if one wanted to.

Dicking around with a lottery is just a way to control the optics and public opinion not the bears or a real management strategy.
The DNR knows bears are not particularly cognizant of state boundaries or lines.

    This.
The screwy system has always been designed to appease the antis. There aren't enough bears being killed in Md.

Considering how long it took for DNR to even admit coyote were in MD, I don't trust their estimates. There are breeding populations in most counties west of the bay, yet you can only hunt them in 4 (if you are lucky enough to get selected).

Exactly Doc, gave up on the Maryland bear draw years ago after applying many years. I’d rather buy my over the county Pa and WV tags which I do every year since it’s a good possibility I’m off. I just had a buddy of mine stop by and show me this. I’ve seen them all kinds of ways but never with a camera.

I got a general license, bow and muzzleloader and furbearer. It was $40.50 I believe. You need the furbearer to shoot coyotes.

Apologies in advance for the dumb question.
I was told that coyotes in MD could be shot year round with no license.
    Is that true?

That is false. There is no limit or season anymore, but you still need the furbearer permin. The exception would be if you catch them attacking your livestock. The permit is cheaper then a chicken coop.

If your on private land, and the farmer that is allowing you to hunt has livestock, stamp or not, you better shoot that coyote or you might not be invited back to hunt. Usually that is the deal to hunt on some private farms. Public land is different, but one time I was on public land a coyote got within 15 ft of me, stamp or not, gone!
