With Alpha's inspiration and total boredom today I threw this together quick... I guess it took about an hour?

I'm not impressed so far, but it passed some time

Is there a standard of performance like how long it takes to boil a quart of water or anything?

So I was working on this one and the center fuel section I added a hinged cover to try and make the air flow better. I put a small bowl on top of it and the wood doesn't slide good. I just built this out of old basement beam support poles the last owner left in the woods. They are rusted and pitted inside. I wan to start working on this again as it cools off, but I am not getting enough heat to get anything more than a simmer right yet.

It is very efficient. I can take one piece of fire wood and cut it in half and split it into fire starters and burn them. Smaller seems better, but I am not getting it to "rocket"

Anyone got any ideas? If nothing else I may try again and but some 3x4 square channel this winter. Working with round pipe was challenging to match that middle pipe in. Lots of rods went in there.

A longer vertical section will probably help. You need to contain the heated air long enough to establish updraft. If it's too short, you don't get much differential velocity between in and out. Also, make sure you don't over-fill the feed tube with wood. It shouldn't be so full that it blocks airflow.

The rough inside will prevent gravity feed. You might supplement with a 6-10yo child to feed sticks ... that seems to work quite well.

You'll want the hot coal bed to be positioned under the vertical tube, and not so much under the feed tube. I would be inclined to move the diagonal feed tube back away from the vertical a bit ... so that it saddles on the horizontal only. That'll make it less likely for the hot air to try to go back up the feed tube.
