You could sponge the rod and reel down with sudsy warm water and give it a good rinse. That'd be all you need to do.

Yep, just a quick rinse but I do remove the reel from the seat so that the seat and the foot dry out and don't store salt.

On my trips offshore my rods on the bow are splashed with sea water when the boats running most of the time. Due to time concerns they don't get cleaned till the next day. Cleaning involves a good rinse with the hose followed by a soap and water scrubbing with a soft brush, same soap and brush i use on the cars. Been doing this for years and I go a lot. I don't open and service the reels until their action starts to feel gritty and that's maybe every other year.

Right, I mist the reel and spray the rod. I've read (and experienced) spraying the reel too hard will drive the salt into the interior of the reel.
I'm also learning to keep my better rods off the gunwales when running in and out.

If you have any kind of carbon, carbon hybrid rod, you don't want to have it get scratched as it produces a stress riser and it will fail.

I am now a firm believer in rod holders.
