It is easy to get the license. It is just another way Marylandistan blocks the peasants from Life, Liberty and The Pursuit of Happiness.

how does one apply for a license?? if one has several calibers they reload for it's easy to bump up against the limit. What is required to store, say 10 pounds legally? Do you need a powder magazine/cabinet?

I was unaware you could unless you were a business. Out of mild curiosity do you have a link to the form or process to get licensed? Just curious to see what a pain it is.

Yes. I know the "man" personally and asked him once about this. They would require nfpa storage requirements which aren't that hard, and pay the permit fee. He didn't think getting the permit was a big deal. It was mostly about proper storage.

I chose not to, in lieu of storing my powder in live rounds, off-site, etc.

See post above. I haven't had one in 20 years but the info should be on the State Fire Marshall's. The Fire person just wanted to see the magazine and where it was (out in the woods).

I guess once I build my detached garage I might do it. It’ll be conditioned, or at least I plan for it to be minimally conditioned and well insulated and reasonable well sealed with a mini split so I can keep it climate controlled as a work shop. Plan to run the heat enough to keep it around 45F in the winter and no hotter than 82F in the summer as well as dehumidifying the space. I can have a proper powder magazine out there. Though I do store my limit of 5# in a nice thick and well built Czech surplus TNT crate in my single family house. I’d guess it’s 1” thick and it is solid wood (the crate, not the house). No gaps or cracks in it.

That way I can store dozens of pounds rather than only getting a pound every once in awhile.

I have been keeping my powder in the woods open to the elements except it doesn't get hot under the trees. Heat is the worst element for smokeless powder and dampness is the worst for blackpowder. Granted, my powder oldest powder is but 25 years old so this is not a large sample. If you rotate your stocks, it should outlive you without a indoor controlled environment.

I would look at something like this to understand the requirements.

    https://www.alliantpowder.com/getting_started/safety/storage_handling.aspx#recommendations

Typically 20 lbs or less (smokeless) in original containers does not need a powder magazine/cabinet in a home environment.

My goal with the thread was to help people that don't know the laws. A member sent me a PM when I was trying to sell over 5lbs here on MDS. It was more of a PSA than anything since this is a public forum and "the man" could happen across it. Not saying how much I have but... I think the trick is to store it in little brass casings and then you can have as much as you want.

I guess the next question for the fire marshal would be, if you really just want to store 5-20#, would THEY require a powder magazine.

And, if one does indeed plan to store in excess of 5# smokeless, does obtaining the storage license mean they have the right to inspect my residence? For me that would be a deal breaker.

Besides, just because i'm purchasing an 8 pound jug from you doesn't mean i'm not sharing it with a friend... or splitting it into 2 allotments and storing half in my summerhouse in PA.... of having a marathon reloading session this afternoon :)

and, where the H&*( did you find an 8 pound jug of powder in this environment? :party29:

Don't ask don't tell, I think it is hilarious that people post things on the innerweb that get them in trouble. You know big brother is always watching, and now the liberals are in charge what secret nefarious things are they doing?

In GOD we trust all others we check.
