No experience with Vihtavuori powders. N140 and N550 powders seem to be available at various locations. I would like to build up some higher end hunting loads with 150s since I can't find Varget or 748. Any suggestions?

I haven’t loaded any 308 loads with VihtaVuori powders. However, I do have more than a passing familiarity with it in 223.

VihtaVuori has the N100 series and the N500 series. The N500 series is the high energy series. Roughly the N140 and the N540 would be used for the same calibers and bullet weights. Looking at the VihtaVuori manual the powders for 150gr bullets would mostly be N140 and N540. N550 is a little to slow for light 308 bullets.

One of the nice things about VihtaVuori powders is they are not temperature sensitive.

Thanks. I meant N540. My bad. I did take a look at the VV Manual, they do have a bunch of loads listed. How do they meter? Im trying to squeak as much velocity out of a 150 Hammer bullet. It seems like the N540 powder would be the best option. Thoughts?

42gr N140 with 165-168gr bullets is extremely accurate in my guns. I would suggest starting there and working up for 150gr bullets.

Just be wary that VV powders aren't as temp stable as varget. Make sure to re affirm velocities and zero when its cold out.

Hi, make sure you stay with an up to date Vhit powder guide. I like this powder alot, n140 for .308/ 168 sei, and n540 was among top producers for 30.06, currently n550 for my long range .260. Back down to 100 yds, 5round one holes are possible. Tikka/ Shilen/142 sierra's.

Hi TGR, I've loaded plenty of .308 150 grain bullets with N140 and N135 but not N540. If velocity is your goal, then N540 will certainly have an edge over N140. I shoot mainly Palma rifle with 155 grain bullets (have loaded N140 and N540 for 155 grain bullets out of a 32" barrel) but shoot a Tikka with the 22" barrel, so wanted a powder than burnt just a little faster than N140. As ever, work loads up to ensure safe pressures etc, but I never had any issues loading N140 at just over 45 grains - that got me just under 2800 fps with a 150gr Nosler BT. The reason I stick to the 100 series is barrel life, compared to the 500 series.

    Shot N150 and 540 with 168gr sierra HPBT out of a 16in AR10 N150 2400fps N540 2300fps both loads are accurate N150 was just more accurate
