So I (like a lot of you) have learned so much on this forum, that many of us like to 'give back'. Some of you give things away (karma raffles and the like), others share their expertise and contribute to thoughtful discussions.

Many years ago I attended a law enforcement only 3-day seminar called 'Street Survival'; it was one of the best training sessions I've ever attended. It was during this course I first heard about 'Verbal Judo' [Diffusing Conflict through Conversation]. I bought the book and although many of the techniques most of us already use, but this book put together the best practices in one place and give the concepts rhyme and reason.

Learn and practice Avoidance, Deterrence and Deescalation.

You are in luck, I just found a free YouTube video of the author of Verbal Judo giving an excellent presentation on this topic. Enjoy.

    Stay safe.

Excellent find. That course is a real eye opener on how to handle situations and de-escalate the conflict before it gets physical.

Sent from my phone using 2 cramping thumbs.

I got the book last year, but haven't actually read it yet.
Thanks for the video. I'll try to actually watch it soon, then maybe I'll get back to the book.

We got some of it during the academy and I bought the book. It's interesting, but I find it works best for people that are natural born BS'ers.

If you missed the video, here is the key bit:

The 5 universal truths of human interaction
    by:
    Dr. George Thompson

Dr. George Thompson explains the five universal truths of human interaction which remain true across the board, regardless of cultural background, gender, etc.

    1) People feel the need to be respected
    2) People would rather be asked than be told
    3) People have a desire to know why
    4) People prefer to have options over threats
    5) People want to have a second chance

The drug mules in Texas and the PG county thugs I have dealt with couldn't care less about any of this.

Nothing is more effective in saying "don't shoot me" than it is to have your own firearm and be shooting back.

Plan D? Not worth the hassle.
    Thanks MM..

    Half way in.

Material is good and basically sound, but presented in a very gimmicky way..
    .

Maybe this modified for B school.. but I prefer a straightforward approach...

" round the box ". Please.

I had to mark it down for annoying me so much ;)

In the bussiness seminar market.. this kind of stuff is common.. Dilbert special.. I sure hope its not that bad for LE..

Having not viewed the vid, I can say I am almost an expert at defusing situations with words. We always referred to that as a "mouth repair". My boss takes me on any job site, anywhere in the country, because he knows I can talk(down) any situation that may arise. I'm like "Tony Lip". I have a knack...
