-Yeah, the title is accurate. I've been lusting after a 1900 Luger for quite some time. Figured if I was a good boy and lucky I'd be able to swing a nice commercial example for around $3-4k. Knew that one of the US test trial examples was waaay outside of my financial reach.
-Fast forward to today and I find a 1900 Luger with all the hallmarks of a US test trial example: no Germany import mark (this is important), no German commercial proof marks. Pulling out my copy of Michael Reese's reference book on the US Test Trial Lugers he has photos of an example with a SN just 7 off of mine (part of the Lt Palmer test report). All the features of #2345 match the one for sale which sports SN 2354.
-I then go to Jan Still's Luger site on Gunboards and dig up the most recent US test Luger list and this one is listed but not as one with provenance. It's sandwiched between a small batch of 5 pistols listed in an official test report (SNs 6339, 6342, 6344, 6345 and 6346) and the acknowledged first pistol of the Bannerman auction lot: 6361. So in my heart I'm convinced that this was a test trial pistol but it has no provenance. Could it be commercial? Maybe, but that means that DWM sold examples illegally, without the country of manufacture mark. Perhaps they took advantage of the large initial shipment to pull individual examples out to sell commercially. It's a possibility that muddies the water.
-I'm smitten anyway and it's mine as I'm the lone bidder (fine by me!). It also comes with a very fine velvet lined display case which is begging for some spare mags and a vintage ammo box.
-She arrived today and all numbers match, including grips. The magazine is the correct type and is un-numbered. The only outlier is that the takedown lever is numbered on the left and most US trials pistols are numbered on the right. Condition is very good and mechanically it's tight and smooth, just what you would expect from a 1900.

Very cool, any significance to the eagle and Star of David crest above the eagles head?

Mawkie strikes again! Very nice and the case is a great bonus.

Is that a star of David or just a way to put 13 stars in a circle?

-It's 13 stars. DWM was clever in that they used nationalism to help market their product. It started with the Swiss, the first to adopt the Luger for their military. DWM put the Swiss cross in a sunburst on the barrel extension. You then see national markings for Russia (crossed Mosin Nagant rifles), Portugal (Crown/M2), etc.

Awesome grab Mawkie. Shame that the provenance is muddy, but it would be equally interesting to me if that handgun was an example of a smuggled-in illegal sale. If true, that took some guts from Mauser to pull while trialing for military use! Either way, it is definitely a very interesting piece and well worth whatever price you paid.

A 1900 US Trials example sold last night. Condition was probably about 5 points better than mine. OTD price? $8200, which was about 3 times what I paid for this one. I'm a happy camper with this one!

As you have a case IDK if you want a holster but Simpsons has one recently posted. About 3 x what you paid for the Luger:D

    Nice score BTW.

Original Trials holsters are so much harder to find than the pistol. I've decided to come at this sideways and hunt for a quality commercial holster. For example, Ambercrombie and Fitch sold nice versions for 1900 and 1906 Lugers up through the 20s. And for a fraction of the price.
El Paso Saddlery sells a "copy" of the Trials holster but I'm not all that jazzed about it. In fact, the repop that Sarco sells looks more correct to my eyes. I wish El Paso got the flap shape right as I'd rather buy American made and their $135 price is very reasonable for a quality built holster. But just can't get past that flap. It's the OCD in me.

-Had time to kill in Gettysburg last week while pup Bucky was getting a 6 hr grooming. It just so happened that Redding Auction was running a collector's ammo auction and I needed a box of .30 Luger ammo for the display case. Got a full box in great shape for $55.
-Then went over to a shop in town that offers some modern firearms alongside their big collection of Civil war smoke poles. They happened to have a rough but correct pre-war Luger mag for cheap. Perfect for display only.
