There are no special benefits associated with membership, but I presume it's the new way that non-IP participants can help keep the lights on. There might be a "Custom Site Supporter Plaque under username" feature turned on in the future, but I don't see it at the present time.
If in your User CP (control panel), you can also navigate to Paid Subscriptions near the bottom of the left column of management options as seen in the first attached picture. You will then get the panel in the second picture below to select your contribution level.
