Today my grandfather James O’Conor Gentry was laid to rest today, he past away March 3. He was a great man and the reason i even join the army were i served 7 1/2 great years. But the biggest disappointment today was he is one of our greatest generations, a WW2 veteran and because is was short noticed he didn’t get any military honors at his funeral. I feel that his county has betrayed him when get gave them his best when they needed him the most. I was shock that no one was there to at least fold is flag, i feel if they have enough troops for Fort Pelosi in DC at least they can send two guys up to say farewell to a WW2 veteran. It just makes my blood boil, i just cant believe it. I done funeral details before and we been called up 2 hours beforehand and always been there.

Sorry to hear this, contact your local American legion or vfw. They maybe can do a memorial service. Sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your service and grandfathers service

Your grandfather deserved better, but you can't blame the Guard of Camp Pelosi, they are detailed to fight a grueling war against an imaginary enemy that can only be seen by drunks, cowards and poltroons. The visionaries who "see" the imaginary enemy run about wailing about invading insurrectionists while the Guard sees only joggers, dog walkers and flower boxes.

Imagine being forced to guard crazy people against fear itself.

Meanwhile the delusional cowardly drunken poltroons need a special "reaction force", probably with armor, artillery and air support to guard them from their fevered imaginations.

Nancy Pelosi and her ilk are shitty pansy millionaires who think the world owe them a favor. They play politics and get in power. They are not worthy descendants of this proud nation found by George Washington and his band of starving soldiers in Valley Forge. I never thought how much I despite the today Democrats.

I feel your frustration. My BIL passed away and was due military honors. Being out in the country, we could not get anything. Me being active duty military, I researched the protocol and did it myself in uniform (recording of the taps, presenting the flag to wife and daughter and presenting his 82d ABN insignia)

I felt like he really got let down but the family was so grateful even though I probably bent some rules.:mad54::mad54::mad54::mad54::mad54:

"Upon the family's request, Public Law 106-65 requires that every eligible Veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony, to include folding and presenting the United States burial flag and the playing of Taps. The law defines a military funeral honors detail as consisting of two or more uniformed military persons, with at least one being a member of the Veteran's parent service of the armed forces. The DOD program calls for funeral home directors to request military funeral honors on behalf of the Veterans' family. However, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration cemetery staff can also assist with arranging military funeral honors at VA national cemeteries. Veterans organizations may assist in providing military funeral honors. When military funeral honors at a national cemetery are desired, they are arranged prior to the committal service by the funeral home." (https://www.cem.va.gov/military_funeral_honors.asp)

    Sorry for your loss.

However, he wasn't betrayed by his Country, more than likely, it was the Funeral Director.

When my Dad passed back in November, our Funeral Director asked if we wanted Military Honors. We said it wasn't necessary, as Dad came home from his honeymoon to a Draft Notice, and spent his first two anniversaries deployed. It wasn't until much later in life that he appreciated his service.

Fortunately, the Funeral Director scheduled them anyway. Dad's casket was covered with an American Flag after the service. When we came out to the hearse after the service, it was adorned with American Flags and had Navy Seals on the doors. Upon arriving at the grave site, we were met by two uniformed Sailors. They served as an honor guard in front of the casket to the grave side. They folded the flag and while one Sailor presented the flag to my Mom, the other stepped off to the side, and retrieved his bugle, and played Taps. It was beautiful, and I was glad the Director did it.

I agree contact the local VFW or American Legion and see about a Memorial Service. Also, with a DD214, the VA will also provide a bronze marker free of charge. Mom and Dad already have a combined marker, so Dad's VA marker will be installed as a foot stone......

We also received three copies of a certificate recognizing his service.

Not to make light of the situation but I thought I would share.

I came up on the duty roster for Funeral Detail. I think it was a 30-day detail. Practically every day we would have to go out and practice the ceremony with a practice casket. I was so small (5' 5") that when the other detailees lifted the casket it took me off my feet. I was like a fish trying to swim out of water. My feet were dangling. It was so comical that they never "invited" me back.

Again, not trying to make light of your situation but as a 21 year vet, one would hope honors are done. Just always not as easy as one would imagine. My respects.

    Sorry for your loss.

Those soldiers who’ve drawn the Capitol Hill duty short straw are not to blame.

I salute your Grandfather’s service to our country. I am not alone.

Find solace in who he was and how he lived his life, and anger not at the manner of his internment. It’s an empty and self fulfilling vice is anger.

I do recall we were asked by the funeral director if we wanted military honors when my father and father-in-law were buried at Veterans Cemetery. I also found that different branches of the military handle the services differently. My father, a WWII marine combat veteran, got full military honors at Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham while my father-in-law, a WWII army combat vet, had two army uniformed service show up at Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Regardless, when having honorably served and being buried at a veterans cemetery, there should have been representatives from his branch of service.

Sorry for your loss. These tributes take time to be scheduled. 72 hours is not enough time to schedule a VFW or AL honor guard. And forget Arlington or any other national cemetery. That takes 6-8 MONTHS. Who’s decision was it for a speedy burial? I had the same issue with my father. He passed on 9 September last year and was buried on September 11. I requested but did not expect an honor guard. I did receive a flag from the funeral home. Again, sorry for your loss.

Wrong! Just attended my BIL funeral at Arlington. He passed away on Mother’s Day LAST YEAR. Protocol is masks. You can still request a ceremony after the burial. That’s what the funeral home stated to me. Again, 72hrs is not enough time to plan and schedule these ceremonies.

Mack-C85 has it right. Maryland law requires military honors for anyone who requests it. Either the family did not request it, or could not find his discharge to request it (required). Having said that, the funeral director may not have told the family. In that case, you can file a complaint with the Maryland Board of Morticians. Not that it helps you any after the fact.

My uncle was in the Marines and was wounded on Iwo Jima. When he died, he had requested no military honors. I was at the grave after everyone else left. (I am a funeral director) There were Marines performing honors in the next section over. I asked the bugler if he would play taps before they lowered the casket. He did. Nobody else knew this, but I felt better.
