Wow! I thought Pennsylvania was a bit more strict than Maryland, but I didn't realize it was that bad.

Notice the transport law applies to "firearms", which includes that single shot .22 Cricket you bought your daughter for her ninth birthday. Maryland's law only applies to handguns (not even to so-called "assault rifles").

Actually, it doesn't. Section 6102 gives definitions.

"Firearm." Any pistol or revolver with a barrel length less than 15 inches, any shotgun with a barrel length less than 18 inches or any rifle with a barrel length less than 16 inches, or any pistol, revolver, rifle or shotgun with an overall length of less than 26 inches. The barrel length of a firearm shall be determined by measuring from the muzzle of the barrel to the face of the closed action, bolt or cylinder, whichever is applicable.

Since the offense in 6106 doesn't list a different definition, the one above is what applies. Basically, handguns, "short barrel rifles" and "short barrel shotguns"

Yeah, PA law has several different definitions of " firearm". It can get confusing, have to constantly check how the word is defined, in the section of law in question.
