Let's say someone were to purchase this pistol.

Is it heretical to refinish it or replace the worn grips? Is this a historical piece that should remain in the safe?

First, you probably won't find grips for it. As much as it looks like a Colt 1911, very few parts interchange. As for being a collectible, who knows. When I bought Mausers out of a barrel in the 5&10 cent stores in the late 1960's, who would have thought that something I paid $10 for would be worth upwards of $500.

I think given how completely worn it is a refinish wouldn't be out of bounds. Thread above was what I was going to do to it one day

You won't find grips though, at least I've never seen them.

    What's "tu-tu"?

BTW: The actual serial number is on the left lower frame and underneath the slide. The number often seen on these on right frame, top of slide, and barrel (and magazines) is the issue number. Many make the mistake of using the issue number as the S/N on the B-M.

To make it more confusing, the Argentines' Sistema Colt S/N is located in the same places as the B-M issue numbers (the real number is stamped on the frame inside the mainspring housing channel).

THESE ARE NOT PICS OF BERTFISH'S PISTOL.
    MERELY FOR INFO PURPOSES :)

This information should be in a thread all by itself, for all to see (those in favor of serializing every gun), the problems with recording serial numbers.
How many times did a gun store clerk record the "issue" number instead of the actual serial number? Now imagine that a similar gun gets reported as stolen under the "issue" number. How many BM's have the same "issue" number? Now the next fellow goes to transfer a similar BM with the same "issue" number and that number comes back stolen? Happens all time!
