I asked the Mrs where, excluding CA and MD, she might like to retire. I told her my sibs were talking about trying to end up closer to each other.

She said: Virginia Beach, King George, or in VA near Delmarva penninsula.

Where near Virginia Beach might be a good place to live / retire?

We have a kid who has twelve years of school before college, but Balto Co schools aren't wonderful, so we might move before he starts college. I haven't looked into VA colleges yet, so feel free to give any info. My bro went to VA Tech.

There are some nice outdoor ranges in the Tidewater area. Avoid Hampton and Newport News and Norfolk. Portsmouth was pretty bad when I lived down that way. Chesapeake was nice, up near Williamsburg was sort of yuppy-ish, but nice. Any of the big Virginia public colleges are outstanding.

Look at Charlottesville. It's beautiful. I went to school at UVA. Hands down one of the best schools in the nation. Solid range in Cville too as well as my all time favorite FFL.

Va public schools are also solid in Albemarle.

What makes you and your wife tick ? Any interest in boating ? Do you fish ? Golf ? Major league sports ? Do you need access to an airport ?

Thanks for all the ideas. I'm mapping each new one and have a thread going with the Mrs on FB.

She likes swimming (miles) and bike riding. She loves the beach. She hates our new coonhound and would like it to go away. She tolerates my having firearms that she doesn't see. She would go on the occasional motorcycle ride with me.

She's lived in Potomac, Australia, La Jolla, St Louis, Ohio, and now Reisterstown.

She goes to the Dr's a lot so we can't be out in the sticks. She takes the train to NY for one specialist and sees another in No VA.

Having an airport within an hour would be good for the occassional trip.

The Tappahannock VA area is indeed interesting.

If you, however, are primarily interested in reducing tax liability on retirement income.... there may be much better choices than VA..... depending on your retirement income situation.

I really liked the Hampton Roads area when I lived there, but the traffic is pretty awful (especially up near the Naval Station). I would avoid Portsmouth, western VA Beach and most of Norfolk (I did enjoy Ghent and the area near Old Dominion because there were tons of bars-I was 22 when I lived there last). I lived in Norfolk, but I spent a major chunk of my time in VA Beach and Chesapeake because my ex girlfriend was from there.

There is a staffed Amtrak station in Newport News and there are two airports (Norfolk and Newport News).

If I had to choose anywhere to live in that area, I would choose the rural southern portion of Chesapeake (south of Great Bridge) or VA Beach (south of Pungo). In either of these places, you can have the benefit of being close to town without actually living 2 inches from your neighbor. There are a number of excellent local back roads for riding and you are only about 90 minutes from Nags Head, the Delmarva, or central VA for longer rides. If you had to live north of Hampton Roads, I would live north of Williamsburg. I like Williamsburg, but it's a tourist/college town that can be expensive.

I've heard it reported that UVA is harder to get into these days than Princeton.

I personally went to Washington & Lee and my son graduated from Virginia Tech. Virginia has a lot of good schools.

For one, B-Burg has the Jefferson National Forest range (free public outdoor range) like 15-20 min from campus

Only range I found was the local rod and gun club that wasn't taking new members and every FFL was over priced. I did my shooting at the GW National Forest range a half hour west of Harrisonburg. Drove up to Gun Connection rather than shop at any of the FFLs around CVille.

We are looking in Greene county area. Close to the mountains and the property is not as expensive.

My wife and I fell in love with a little town on the VA shore called Cherryton. Its just north of the Chesapeake Bay bridge and tunnel.
