I was told by the retired LEO that did my HQL class that stopping between home and the range/gunsmith was permissible as long as it was on your route, and you did not deviate from your route, or pass the destination to go to get gas/go to the store/etc. He told us to get receipts to prove time of departure from the range/smith in case of a traffic stop.

Of course, it's all up to the officer's discretion, and take the advice with a grain of salt, but I can't believe that they just tailed a guy to RoFo, and hemmed him up, just for stopping to get gas. I go to that RoFo when leaving Freestate every single time, and have never had an issue.

As far as the OP, like others have said, I'm not worried about LEOs so much as I'm worried about the scum of the earth when leaving the range. That's why I always have a "battle buddy" with me, and my military instilled SA increased.

Tip of the day, don't listen to LEO's regarding the law. Talk to a lawyer instead.

The LEO that told you that suffers from severe BGOS.

At AGC a few years ago.

It was the perfect day to be there. I was the only one on the line and had the whole place to myself. Even the RSOs were all indoors.

I was getting ready to change targets when I noticed a guy sitting by one of the shooting benches. Nothing unusual but bells were going off in the back of my head. Dude had no gun, no bag. Not even ear pro.

Maybe he was waiting for someone, but something told me not to leave my gun on the table and go downrange. I decided to wait him out.

A long time (like 30 mins) later, dude picked up and left.

Ever since that day, I'd pocket the bolt carrier or otherwise disable the gun whenever I'm downrange alone.

Trust your instincts, and watch your 6.

Anyone else suspicious when leaving a gun range with your guns? :envy:
I always look around for cops, make sure I am not being tailed and always watch my speed limit because I feel leaving a gun range is a prime opportunity for a cop to pull you over and harass you looking to charge you for something gun related. :sad20: Just how I feel in this day and age we live in.

There have been several instances in MD where a person was followed from a range and robbed so you should make sure no one is following you from that standpoint. As for cops hanging out by gun ranges, I don't think that's worth worrying about.

There were stolen guns at a club I belonged years ago.
The HP range was in the middle of about 30 acres on one side of the grounds.

If you turned the bench up and walked down to the butts and left your rifle there it could be gone when you got back.
Anybody could walk in there from the woods and you wouldn't even know it.

My biggest worry leaving the range is someone from the same range trying to talk me into giving/selling some of my ammo.

Do you have one or two actual verifiable “instances” to offer, or are these the continued unsubstantiated rumors that hit this site periodically? “A friend of mine told me......”, “a range officer from my club said......”.

Heard dozens of these claims over the last 20 or so years, zero of which have proven true even after very basic and minimal research. In my opinion, a cautionary word of advice in the past, if heard enough times will manifest into remembrance of “several instances” of an event that never actually happened, but logically could very well have happened.

Still a very good idea to be careful and cautious.

Well, I don't have the time or dates written down but I know from hearing it from the manager that it happened twice from On Target. I also recall a PG County officer telling me about a guy following someone home from the range near Andrews.

Many years ago, I was shooting my Barrett on the 200 yard range there. No one was around and I had to change my targets downrange. I had to lock it up in my truck each time I went downrange. Contemplated carrying it with me downrange but it's a heavy sucker to hump that far and back.

These days, I keep my head on a swivel when outdoors, even in my neighborhood. I have watched my mirrors carefully for many years, especially when transporting anything of value.

I am sure not to drive like an idiot and keep close to the speed. Other than that, don’t particularly worry about it. If I was taking handguns I make sure just to go straight to and from the range.

    That’s basically it.

Maybe because my range isn’t in an urban area with lots of people around. Dunno.

Lol. Thanks. Norton is evil in a good way and I thank him for that. Anyway, yeah. It's been a while. Life kicked me in the nuts. I think it has kicked all of us lately. So be it. But happy to be back among like minded people. *Group hug*

I was always skeptical of the in lane cameras. They technically have video evidence of you depending on what weapons you take the range. For example I bring “high capacity” magazines. If they require registration down the road for those or ban “assault weapons”. They have proof of possession from range footage of what I own. That’s assuming the range cooperates with the feds.

I'd be more worried about who else might see that you have some nice guns and decide they want them.

Not worried about the police since my guns are all legal and are legally transported.

^^THIS. Situational awareness always when coming/going to ranges.

Not worried about police if all is legal and correct

If we get to the point where the FBI is viewing film footage of you at the range to determine whether your magazines hold more than 10 rounds then I think we will be already past the point of no return and none of their silly laws will matter anymore. I, for 1, won't be worrying about that.
