For reasons that would take too long to explain, I want to commission an artist i know to paint my AR. Is there anything external on an AR that should NOT be painted?

Also...of anyone has ever done this id be interested in hearing how it went.

I put a little bit of painter tape in the end of the muzzle and a little around trigger at bottom of receiver. Sounds like a cool idea , post pics when you’re done

    Hanover Armory does custom cerakote.

If you want a durable finish that won't wear like a 60 year old amusement park ride, then I would suggest getting a good cerakote job.

Any kind of paint out of a can or applied with a brush will flake off quickly.

Ok so might aswell add more detail. I want to have the damascus camo from call of duty on my AR. Dony ask. But hanove armory csnt do that. Their reply:

"We sure do cerakote, however to do a camo like that you wouldn't use cerakote. More then likely you would have to find a place that does hydro dipping and unfortunately we do not do that. Your best bet is to find a company online that specializes in crazy camo and patterns and shipping it out to them. I would look up a company who uses gun candy, they make the very bright color coatings like the ones pictured."

Really don't wanna send it off

Sounds like you have your answer then. Hydro dipping is the way.

No hand painted finish is going to be worth a damn.

But for larping in your moms basement, either should work.

Worth a damn is relative .

A hand painted AR ( over top of existing finish ) will go bang , and stand up to the elements just as well as an unpainted AR .

It just will quickly show substantial paint wear . Doesn't bother the rattle can guys , because it can be touched up with $5.99 cans of spray paint as needed . If your artist is willing to provide monthly touch up services , knock your socks .

I paint all but but the barrels usually. I disassemble first.
