  • Out here on "vacation" in the midst of the COVID-19 scare, and making plans to get back to MD by the end of the week. Preparing for "Plan B", driving back instead of flying, led me to this site in a round about way - am thinking about buying an inexpensive shotgun in Nevada on the way back for "road protection" and I'm not sure of the legalities; from what I've read it shouldn't be a problem, but . . .Any body with experience buying a non-restricted (MD) long gun out of state out there? I already have a few shotguns at the house, but they're not helping me here. I don't fly armed anymore, but have a LEOSA license.

You can buy a shotgun out of state. You’re just going to have to follow any transport laws for the states you will be driving through. Most are probably going to say it can’t be loaded or it has to be out of reach.

Having LEOSA, I doubt you'd have anyone hassle you. That said I'd leave it in the trunk to be safe. Just avoid driving though DC once you get back. Safe travels!

Pretty sure I would NOT feel safe with it in the trunk. A buncha thugs come at you after you got gas, and then what?
Use the old "I've got $100 in the trunk trick? That won't work.
Some free states allow you to have it loaded, in the vehicle, within reach. Otherwise what use is it?
To the OP, if you come home the southern way you will be in better shape. Certain CITIES may not allow this - St. Louis (?).
    Illinois is a no-go.
VA is A-OK. Check the laws.

If driving from SoCal, Arizona is probably a better bet. Getting to Nevada is a little out of the way. A couple hours.

From nocal, yeah, the I 80 part will have stuff. If you take 50, some of the small towns may have stuff too. Used, but good. I 80 could also have some small town deals on used. Maybe.

You may have trouble purchasing a long gun from chain stores even though it is perfectly legal. Often they have policies against selling to anyone out of state.

I bought a Garand at a small private shop in Nevada about two years ago.
