In 1986... I bought a used Colt Cobra. It was to be my off duty side arm. After hearing some folks talking about the frame issues... I called the Colt Corporation and talked with one of their designers/Rep. I specifically requested advice about using the standard Departmental issue +P .38. The gentleman stated emphatically... “Do NOT.” He said that Colt would not be liable if I did.

I traded that revolver for a S&W Model 64-2... never looked back.

But what was the year of manufacture of that cobra? It seems as if that is the defining factor on if there will be issues.

The easiest way to tell a Colt D-frame is post-1972 is whether it has an enclosed ejector rod. The only exception to that is in the mid- to late-'70s Colt made a run of .32 caliber D-frames with leftover barrels from pre-'72.

YOM unknown. But I do remember the Colt Rep telling me that they would not be liable for any damages if I were to use our +P loads in any air-weight frame Colt revolver.

In a van, down by the river.
I bought one unfired, NIB from a coworker years ago. Kept it and 1 box of .38 for years. Sold it, prob '93 to a guy, same condition. Box wear. Figured unfired would be more valuable to a collector, and I wanted something to shoot. Regret selling it.
