    1. Action item: Fairfax City hearing on local gun-control on February 9Fairfax City is getting public input and voting on their proposed local gun-control ordinance. The meeting is virtual on Tuesday, February 9 , at 7 pm. As written, it has the maximum restrictions: prohibits guns in local government buildings, parks, recreation and community centers, and at permitted events or at events that should have been permitted. No exceptions for CHP holders. However, when discussing this ordinance late last year, there seemed to be a possibility that parks could be exempted and a slim possibility some kind of concession for permit holders. Their plan was to introduce the most restrictive version and possibly modify it during the meeting on February 9.

Information on attending the virtual meeting and commenting on it is here: https://www.fairfaxva.gov/services/about-us/city-meetings

The proposed ordinance can be seen here: https://fairfax.granicus.com/MetaViewer.php?view_id=11&clip_id=2608&meta_id=86339

    2. Action item: Winchester planning local gun-control. Hearing on February 9Winchester City Council is pushing local gun-control, using the events of January 6 in DC as an excuse. They plan on getting public input (and voting?) on the proposed ordinance on Tuesday, February 9, at 6 pm in a virtual meeting. Winchester wants to do what seven other tyrannical localities have done: prohibit guns in local government buildings, parks, recreation and community centers, and at permitted events or at events that should have been permitted. No exceptions for CHP holders, either, which at least Newport News had the decency to do.

Information on how to attend the meeting virtually and/or send in comments are here: https://www.winchesterva.gov/city-event/city-council-regular-meeting-and-work-session-20

We do not yet have a link to the actual proposed ordinance.

    3. Gun-bill status in the General Assembly
HB2081, which bans guns within 40 feet of a polling place, cleared the House and heads to the Senate, where we will try to stop it. Here is the House vote:

Voting anti-gun: Adams, D.M., Aird, Askew, Ayala, Bagby, Bourne, Bulova, Carr, Carter, Cole, J.G., Convirs-Fowler, Delaney, Gooditis, Guy, Guzman, Hayes, Helmer, Heretick, Herring, Hope, Hudson, Jenkins, Jones, Keam, Kory, Krizek, Levine, Lopez, McQuinn, Mugler, Mullin, Mundon King, Murphy, Plum, Price, Rasoul, Reid, Roem, Samirah, Scott, Sickles, Simon, Simonds, Subramanyam, Sullivan, Torian, Tran, VanValkenburg, Ward, Watts, Willett, Williams Graves, Filler-Corn

Voting pro-gun: Adams, L.R., Austin, Avoli, Batten, Bell, Bloxom, Brewer, Byron, Campbell, J.L., Campbell, R.R., Cole, M.L., Cox, Coyner, Davis, Edmunds, Fariss, Fowler, Freitas, Gilbert, Head, Hodges, Hurst, Kilgore, Knight, LaRock, Leftwich, Marshall, McGuire, McNamara, Miyares, Morefield, O'Quinn, Orrock, Poindexter, Ransone, Robinson, Runion, Rush, Tyler, Walker, Wampler, Ware, Webert, Wiley, Wilt, Wright, Wyatt

HB1773 (Constitutional Concealed Carry), HB1793 (CHP holders exempt from local gun-control), HB2285 (additional One Handgun a Month exemptions) were all killed by the Public Safety Firearms committee, proving again that the committee's name of "Public Safety" is a misnomer. HB2310 (extension on validity of online training to March 31) passed out of subcommittee, but expect mischief in full committee on Friday.

Your emails and calls made a difference on HB2319, which requires a gun owner to keep their firearms inaccessible to any person who is a cohabitant and is prohibited from having firearms. Originally the bill required all guns to be unloaded and the ammunition stored separately. The revised bill drops both of those requirements. VCDL is now neutral on HB2319. HB2319 passed out of committee and will be heard in full committee on Friday.

    7. Gun control was meant to control minorities and it doesGun control has a shameful history in America. It was created by Democrats to disarm blacks and other minorities from around the time of the Civil War onward. A disarmed segment of the population is much easier to control than an armed one.

Gun control still affects minorities at a much higher rate than other groups and it is still being pushed by Democrats. Gun control needs to be defunded and repealed in its entirety. The Democrat Party needs to get onboard with protecting civil rights, not destroying them.

    8. Terry McAuliffe wants to run for Virginia Governor again and wants a ban on semi-automatic rifles if he winsHere we go again. Another Democrat politician, Terry McAuliffe, that wants to take our guns. Forget that semi-automatic rifles are rarely used by criminals. People are beat to death with hands and feet at a much higher rate than they are shot with any kind of long gun.

Terry McAuliffe is running again to be Governor and this time he is running on a gun-control agenda. Election day is Tuesday, November 2, and gun owners had better get to the polls in droves if we want to keep our guns.

    10. Virginia Supreme Court to rule on a concealed handgun in backpack in car at feet of passengerFrom one of our attorney members:

The Virginia Supreme Court heard oral argument this week in the matter of Myers v. Commonwealth (link to audio below) in which the Court is asked to decide whether a handgun concealed within a backpack at the feet of a passenger in the right front passenger seat falls within the vehicle exception to the concealed carry statute. Defendant was convicted of carrying concealed without a permit under these facts and the conviction was upheld at the Court of appeals.

It is hard to know where the Court will rule. On delivery, I did not find either counsel to be particularly effective, but the counsel for the Attorney General’s office was downright terrible. She seemed utterly unprepared to present the argument.

    A member sent me this:

First we heard the helicopters (plural).
Then we saw lights, more lights, yelling, SWAT-type folks with weapons drawn moving through our backyard, with dogs.

After about a half hour, there was much commotion a few doors down, and a bit later, the presumed shooter was taken on a stretcher by ambulance.

My wife wanted to go out and look.

My daughter and I restrained her.

We gathered ready weapons for the purpose, and went to our safe area.

    Just never know.
