Which state? I grew up in Michigan and they did the same thing. I left in 77, I think they stopped the practice in the mid 80’s.

This was in Maine, Aroostook County. I left the job in 73 or 74, and don’t really know how much longer they kept doing this. They went out of business shortly afterwards and the parent company, Ames, came in for a few years.

I purchased my first firearm from JC Penny in Security Mall when I was 18. WE Sells in Hanover PA still have the ole time gun store feel.

For .22 they asked if it was for handgun or rifle use.

If you said handgun, they had to log.

So I only bought .22 rifle ammo. :D

It got to the point where some stores logged all ammunition sales. Some pushed the idea that they couldn't know what type of firearm it could or would be chambered in, so they'd log anything and everything. Another law where the stupid was strong, and that accomplished absolutely nothing of any value.

We used to buy our milsurps (some from the Spanish American War) from the barrels in the Kresge and Woolworth 5 and 10 cent stores. Roses on the Eastern Shore still sold Mosins and Mausers till sometime in the '90's.

Yep. We had CRATES of them in the back.

Keep in mind this was only 35 or 40 years after the war. In the 60s there was a hardware store near me that sold a sh!tload of WW1 surplus from helmets, uniforms, knives and guns. That was about 45 or 50 years after WW1 ended.

Amazing what kids will do when unattended. I got canned working for a corner deli when the owner caught me boxing with some hanging cheeses in the basement.

Yeah. I was 15. The balloons were being carried by kids through the store. 1 shot, 1 kill. LOL.

I begged my father for a 12 gauge shotgun. He got it foe me for Xmas in the mid 70s. It was an H&R Topper 158. He got it from Zayres. I think it was about $30.00 Still have it today.

Did it go something like this?

    That was awesome.

    No, the manager said:

“That’s the funniest thing I’ve had happen. I have to fire you, but it was funny”.

He told me if I needed a recommendation for my next job, he’d still write me a good one.
