Gonna get a gift to myself shortly. I keep coming back to the Marauder, but the Akela is a beaut....I want a hot .177 for target shooting mostly...something I can push out to 100 yards for fun, but mostly under that distance. Accuracy is key. Anyone with experience or advice? I have a hand pump and a compressor.

I had an accurate .177 MRod but it was a heavyweight. (Not as accurate as the Cricket) I put a reg in it and took a bunch of wood off the stock. I was getting about 100 shots in the 18fpe range.

The Benjamin marauder with plastic stock is only 7.3 pounds and it is a tried and true product. Plus, there are loads of stock and aftermarket parts and Crosman will sell you any parts you need.

The Marauder has loads of modification threads on line and, with a little tweeking, it can become a first class target gun.

Thank you guys. So, no love for the Akela? How difficult is it to install a regulator? I know you said you had installed one on your Artemis right? Is it something I could undertake as a noob, with some video assistance?
...or does it take a machinist? Edit...(I just watched an install of a regulator in an MRod...i think I can handle that)

    And that MRod is gorgeous...

The dilemma resolved itself....with an assist from BigTinBoat and the Black Friday coupon from Crosman. Ordered the Akela in .177 and an Athlon Talos in 4-16-40. Currently printing barrel bands and single shot trays for the rifle that I am impatiently waiting for....My buddy ordered the same in .22. After shooting my Avenger the other day, he was sold on PCPs. Now the hardest part is waiting...I have some small parts arriving in the next few days to tinker with the Stoeger trigger...so hopefully is passes quickly.

Got my shipping notice this morning...optic is enroute too...pellets are awaiting a home. Starting with a tin of CPHP in 10.5 grain...the plan is get as close to 20fpe as possible, while not sacrificing accuracy or breaking the sound barrier ...but it all really depends on what speed it is the most accurate at. If it is in the mid to high 800s, so be it.

I have found my springers to like Crossman pellets and my PCP's to like JSB Diablo pellets. They all have their own personalities though.

That's currently what mine like too. The Crosman were cheap and readily available though. I will get some others to try out later.

I like my MRod. The .25 shoot amazing with the Green Mountain barrels. The Akela look very cool. I've always wanted a bullpup. Please provide feedback. Look like it uses much of the marauder parts. Hope you like it.

It actually uses NO marauder parts. They are Turkish made for Benjamin. They get really tight string like the Kral's. Pretty sure that's who is contracted to make them.

The Akela arrived a few minutes ago. I have 10.5 grain CPHPs to feed it. I have not shot a target with yet, as I'm waiting for the scope to arrive later today. I did clean the barrel, use the chrony and mount a moderator. The akela has a power knob on the side. At max settings it is pushing 1022 fps. That was the average of 7 shots. With it not being regulated...it loses 3-5 fps per shot on max. On the lowest, it averaged 572 fps, and at about 3/4s, it averages 880 to 915fps. That is where I think I will keep it, unless it prefers something better for grouping. Without the moderator, it was registering 75db. Which is quiet already. It has a distinct ping to it. There are a couple of baffles in the shroud. I added a threaded adapter and a printed moderator...which then knocks it down to 71 dB. Once I get the scope in, I will punch some paper with it.

That printed can you have is almost as big as my donnyfl Sumo.

Yes it is. But it works very well. It was designed by a fellow MDS member. I have tried several different ones...but nothing has been better than this design. I do have a slimmer one on my crosman 1377. I will have to see how it works on this .177. I made a couple of them in case I break one.

I shot crosman 10.5 and 7.9 grains today. Nearly identical POI, at 20 yards anyway. It was a little chilly to do too much outside.for too long. I was able to quickly fire a 14 round magazine and cover it with my thumb. Both were able to cycle and reset the squirrel target, so they hit pretty hard. 15 and 20 fpe. I know the 10.5 grains were firing at 880 to 915 fps...I assume the 7.9s were a little higher...but at short distances, they are accurate.

I have switched to indoor shooting for the winter. My old bones don't like standing in the cold. I mostly just shoot my springers at 45 feet as I feel it is a waste of pellets shooting the PCP's at such a close distance. Plus the springers give me a work out just loading them.

For anyone interested the Crosman site will let you "double up" discounts. Chip got his at a pretty good price, but if you use COMEBACK10 in the coupon box you can get another 10% off bringing it to like $350 (plus tax)

I replaced the breech seal on my springer today, but didn't shoot it to see if that was the issue. I also took the screws out at the hinge point and reinstalled them to make sure I didn't over tighten them when I worked on the trigger last. Probably do more indoor shooting myself.
