It'd be cooler if Dad hadn't used the heck out of it, but it is what it is - Dad didn't buy guns to look at them. He USED them - not only around the farm, but he was also a competition marksman, and as a small-town police officer, that .44 Mag spent some time on his pistol belt carried in the line of duty, among many others. He had plenty to choose from.

Hell, I don't even care for S&W that much but that revolver is gorgeous. The fact that it was carried by a working police officer makes it all the more so to me. I don't like museum pieces, I feel bad about shooting them.

Museum pieces aren't always about being pristine. As often as not the museum wants to show an object as it was used...not restored. Sometimes restoration is necessary...sometimes not.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I don't want to OWN a museum piece. By that I mean any gun that would be very valuable in its unfired condition, because I'd rather fire it.

Yeah. I bought an unfired 1974 Diamondback. It tortures me.

I had a chance a few years ago (pre-2013) to buy an Uzi carbine. I can't prove that it was never fired but it certainly appeared that way and had everything that came from the factory including a letter from IWI that named the purchaser. I eventually told my friend that I'd love to have it but in that condition it was worth much more to a collector than I could afford.

That's kind of an interesting fact about my Dad. By the time he passed, he had quite a few things that were pretty valuable, but he never bought them to collect - he bought them because he wanted them to shoot, and over time they became valuable. Among other things:

    Colt SSA, circa 1907
Winchester Model 1886 short rifle in 45-90, made in 1891
    Winchester Model 1887 trench gun
Luger - I don't know much about what that gun was
    Thompson Model 1928
    LC Smith SXS
    Colt Lend Lease 1911

Everything he obtained, he obtained to shoot or because he thought they were interesting - the monetary value never mattered much to him.

Sounds like your Dad was awesome.

He has his moments - he was a stern disciplinarian when when I was little, but he and I got pretty close when I was in my 20s before he died.

Here are some more that came from him. The Blackhawks are 41 Mag (3 digit SN on that one) and .357 Mag, both outfitted with Super Blackhawk hammers - he preferred the lower profile and wider surface area. The SAA clone is just an Uberti - can't remember the model off the top of my head.

The little S&W .22 is a Model 18-2. It's not particularly accurate, but it's fun to plink with.

Both of those Blackhawks are dream guns to me. In their exact set up. Load for those and use them as he did! Which looked to be in the vein of good taste and accurate firearms

That 45-90 is another that can be made to pop dingers at 650 with ease! Check out Sagebrush Longshots on YouTube and see some of the old big bores of the day still stretching way out with irons. I got bit by that bug!

The R8, in particular, has been a pretty cool training aid due to being able to use the Mantis X10 with the rail. That smooth 9lb double action trigger really tests your ability to control it, especially when shooting single-handed. It's a little tiring right now, but I suspect that daily dry-fire will improve that.

Just added a new Revolver to the collection. Been wanting a Colt wheel gun for a while and found this nice King Cobra.

Brought home my newly adopted Colt Python 3" from MD's seven day jail...
    Python-3.jpg

I swapped out the factory grips for an older design service type and a Tyler T-Grip which makes more sense for a snubby type revolver...

Now it goes with my 2 1/2" Python snubby I've had for many years...

Now I have something like eight Pythons of various vintages, barrel lengths and finishes.
