What is the smallest pelican case to house a 16in upper and a collapsible stock lower ? 1600, 1550 ?

    i have a couple pelican 1650's, a couple storm 2750's, a pelican 1750 and a storm 3300.

the 16-series likely is too tall, but not really wide/long enough, for firearms. you'd probably have to go with at least a 1700.

if you get a 1750 or a 3300, you can get additional "middle" foam pieces and custom-cut them for various firearm setups. a 3-pack of foam is 65 bucks with free shipping on amazon. :)

On a similar note, I was hoping someone could recommend a Pelican case to carry two rifles with no optics.... An AR and AK. The AR can become compact, the AK not so much.

The 1700 seems a bit tight.

    They are just so large.

I want to transport the gun separated into upper and lower to fit it into a small case that looks more like a general purpose equipment box rather than a firearm.

What AF said. Any hard case flat and rectangular is going to look like a rifle case. You could go with the cube shaped Pelican/Storm, but that would be a lot of wasted space and a pain to move around.

    How about a guitar case?
